Malta is fast becoming one of Europe’s most active water polo destinations. After hosting back-to-back Champions League finals and an increasing number of camps and tournaments, the country has firmly positioned itself as a hub for the sport. Now, a new addition is coming—this time from the island of Gozo.
From 28 to 30 November 2025, Gozo will host the first-ever Gozo Waterpolo Masters Tournament, offering an exciting new stage for 40+ and 50+ age groups to compete in a setting unlike any other.
Competitive spirit meets Mediterranean charm
The tournament will take place at the Gozo Aquatic Centre, a modern, Olympic-size indoor pool located in the island’s capital, Victoria. The facility, one of Malta’s newest, provides ideal conditions for experienced players looking to enjoy the game in a more relaxed, yet high-quality environment.
The event is organised by four of Malta’s legacy clubs—Barracudas SC, Balluta Young Boys (BYB), Comino Masters, and Otters ASC—with support from VisitMalta. Their goal: to bring together former elite and passionate amateur players for a weekend of serious competition mixed with cultural experiences and social connection.
Perfect climate, global reach
One of the key reasons Malta continues to attract water polo teams from around the world is its climate. Even in late November, the islands remain inviting, with daytime temperatures typically ranging between 16°C and 21°C. Combined with excellent infrastructure, ease of travel, and stunning Mediterranean surroundings, it’s an ideal destination for athletes looking to extend their season.
Malta is easily accessible from all over Europe and beyond. With frequent flights to Malta International Airport (MLA) and a short 20-minute ferry ride to Gozo, players from around the globe can reach the tournament without hassle.
Tournament format and social events
The tournament is open to teams in two categories—40+ and 50+—with squads of up to 15 players. Each team will play at least six matches, under the latest FINA rules. Matches are 25 minutes long, with a 5-minute warm-up, designed to maintain intensity without overextending athletes.
The €125 per player participation fee includes entry to all matches and the official Welcome Party on 29 November—a private evening gathering with food and drinks provided, exclusive to players and guests. Off the field, teams can take part in optional excursions, giving players and supporters a chance to discover Gozo’s cultural and natural highlights.
Travel and Accommodation
For teams and groups, 3-star and 4-star accommodation packages will be available, with more information coming soon. Everything is designed to keep logistics simple, so players can focus on enjoying the competition and the island itself. Whether you’re a seasoned master or simply looking for a new destination to enjoy the sport you love, Gozo offers the perfect setting to end your 2025 water polo season on a high.
