Steaua Bucharest has announced that it had appointed Djordje Filipovic as the new head coach.
A few days ago, we reported that Filipovic, an assistant coach at Novi Beograd, had left the Serbian club to join Steaua, the runner-up in the 2025 Romanian Championships. That piece of information has been officially confirmed today.
Filipovic (41) worked at Novi Beograd for several years. He was an assistant to Vladimir Vujasinovic, Igor Milanovic, and Zivko Gocic, who left the club shortly after Filipovic.
During his playing career, Filipovic represented several clubs, including Partizan, Radnicki, Sport Management, and Steaua. He was with the Bucharest-based team from 2015 to 2018. During those three seasons, he helped the team win three Romanian championships and two national cups. While playing for Radnicki, he also won the 2013 Euro Cup.
Filipovic replaced Bogdan Rath, who resigned just a day before the fifth match of the Romanian League. According to official information, he left for personal reasons. However, unofficial sources suggest that a possible reason could be that the club didn’t offer him a new contract.
Rath, who is also Romania's head coach, will lead the national team at the World Championships in Singapore.
