The best Spanish club confirmed its first reinforcement for the next season. Barceloneta has made a significant addition to its team for the upcoming season with the return of Argentine-born Italian player Gonzalo Echenique, a four-time Champions League winner.
The 35-year-old attacker previously played for Barceloneta for two seasons from 2013 to 2015 and was part of the squad that achieved a historic success by winning the 2014 Champions League.Â
Echenique arrived in Spain from Argentina in 2009. Before joining Barceloneta, he played for Montjuic and Sabadell. After his time in Catalonia, he moved to Italy, where he played for European giant Pro Recco from 2015 to 2025, including a one-season loan to Primorje in the 2015-2016 season. During his nine seasons at Pro Recco, Echenique had an important role in the team’s numerous successes, including three Champions League titles (2021, 2022, 2023) and numerous other trophies.
He represented Spain at the 2016 Olympic Games, but since 2019, he has competed for the Italian national team. With the "Settebello," Echenique became a World Champion in 2019 and also won two silver medals at the World Championships (2022 and 2024), a bronze medal at the European Championships in 2024, and a silver medal at the 2023 World Cup.
Barceloneta still hasn't announced who will replace Elvis Fatovic on the bench.
