Apollon Smyrnis has made a significant reinforcement by signing American player Hannes Daube for the upcoming season. This transfer marks the largest in the club's 11-year history, as announced by Apollon.
Daube, 25, was Team USA's top scorer at the 2024 Olympic Games, where he scored 18 goals on the path to winning the Olympic bronze medal.
This move brings Daube back to Greece, as his first experience in European water polo was with Olympiacos during the 2020/21 season. He also played for Marseille. Daube has the Greek League and Cup, as well as the French League and the national cup, in his treasury. However, his most significant achievements in European water polo came with Jug Dubrovnik, where he won the Euro Cup in 2024. In addition to the Euro Cup, he also secured the Croatian Cup trophy during his time with Jug.
After a one-season spell at Jug, Daube continued his career in Australia with the UWA Torpedos in Perth.
Since 2018, Daube has been a regular member of Team USA. Besides the Olympic bronze, his career highlights include two gold medals at the Pan American Games, a bronze medal in the 2023 World Cup, and a silver medal in the 2021 World League, among others. He was the USA's best scorer at major competitions multiple times.
