Legendary Italian goalkeeper Stefano Tempesti announced that he would retire at the end of the season.
Until then, he will participate in the 5th-place playoffs of Serie A1 with Ortigia.
Tempesti, who will turn 46 in July, began his professional career at Florentia, where he won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 2001. The most successful years of his career were spent at Pro Recco, where he played for 16 seasons. During his time at Recco from 2003 to 2016, Tempesti won an impressive 39 trophies, including five Champions League titles.
In 2019, he joined Ortigia and contributed significantly to the club's greatest achievement: securing 2nd place in the 2023 Italian Cup.
Tempesti made his debut for the Italian national team in 1994 and played his final game for "Settebello" at the 2017 World Championships, where Italy finished in 6th place. His notable accomplishments with the national team include two Olympic medals (silver in 2012 and bronze in 2016) and the title of World Champion in 2011, where he was also named the best goalkeeper of the tournament. He competed in the Olympic Games five times, from 2000 to 2016. Throughout his illustrious career, he played 326 games for Italy and won 13 medals at major competitions.
