The 2nd edition of the Next Generation U19 Water Polo Tournament in Sabadell showcased some of the finest young talents in European water polo, with thrilling matches from the group stages to the finals. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments provided high-level competition, with FTC Telekom (Hungary) winning the men’s title and CN Catalunya (Spain) triumphing in the women’s event.
CN Catalunya Triumphs in a Thrilling Final
The women’s tournament was equally captivating, with surprises and impressive performances from start to finish. One of the most unexpected results came during the group stage when South Africa’s Team Elevate stunned the host club CN Sabadell, delivering a wake-up call to the local favorites.
CN Sabadell recovered from this early setback, dominating their matches to reach the final, where they faced off against CN Catalunya. The final was an exhilarating encounter, showcasing high levels of swimming, defensive strength, and offensive creativity. CN Catalunya’s determination and skill ultimately led them to a narrow 6:5 victory, earning them the championship trophy and marking a memorable achievement for the Catalan side.
Men’s Tournament: FTC Telekom Takes the Crown
The men’s tournament saw fierce battles throughout the group stages, setting the stage for an exciting knockout phase. Group B witnessed a particularly tight race, where goal difference decided the group leader, with CN Atlètic-Barceloneta (CNAB) edging out Hungary’s BVSC to claim the top spot. Both teams displayed immense skill and determination, but only one could advance as the group winner.
The knockout rounds brought even more intensity, culminating in a highly anticipated final between two unbeaten teams – FTC Telekom from Hungary and VK Sabac from Serbia. FTC Telekom proved to be the stronger side, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and tactical play to secure a 9:6 victory, earning the prestigious title. The Serbian squad, notably younger and filled with potential, left the tournament with heads held high, knowing they have a bright future ahead of them.
The bronze medal match was a nail-biter between CNAB and BVSC. Despite both teams giving it their all over four quarters, the game ended in a draw, leading to a penalty shootout. In the end, CNAB’s players remained composed under pressure, clinching the bronze medal and a place on the podium.
Outstanding Performers and Rising Stars
The tournament concluded with the selection of the best seven players in both the men’s and women’s categories, highlighting the incredible talent on display throughout the competition. These young athletes, many of whom are expected to reach the top levels of the sport, provided a glimpse into the future of water polo.
