Two giants of European water polo, Pro Recco and Ferencvaros, will face off twice in the official matches in the USA in September.
Today, the two clubs issued a joint statement, underlining that the games would be a historical event in the purpose of promoting water polo in the United States
The 11-time Champions League winner and the reigning European champion announced:
„Two iconic clubs in the world of water polo, Ferencvaros and Pro Recco, are taking the sport to a new dimension this September: in the summer of 2025, the Hungarian and Italian powerful teams will face off in two official matches in the United States of America.
The first match will be played in New York, and a few days later, another game will take place at the Princeton University swimming pool in New Jersey.
Pro Recco and Ferencvaros are not only the dominant clubs in their own countries, but also in the entire water polo world. The two giants’ dominance is demonstrated by the fact that they won the Champions League in the previous five editions and also played against each other in the final twice. In 2021, Pro Recco won; in 2024, Ferencvaros reached the top of Europe, defeating its great rival. The rivalry between the two teams will now continue overseas, for the first time in the sport’s history.
This long-planned collaboration involves more than just two games; it is also a sports diplomacy and public outreach initiative aimed at raising awareness and appreciation of water polo on an international level. This is particularly important in the United States, where the sport is gaining more attention”, Ferencvaros and Pro Recco announced.
The exact dates and locations will be announced in the coming weeks.
