Olympiacos Piraeus clinched its 34th title of the champion of Greece. This is its 8th national title in a row and the 18th “double crown” (this season, Olympiacos won the Greek Cup for the 21st time).
One of the crucial wins in the battle for the trophy, was a victory over Vouliagmeni (12:3) last week. After that, Olympiacos needed just a point in the remaining three matches to secure the title.
Olympiacos officially won the title after the 20th round of the national league, by a 20:6 win over Ethnikos.
Ethnikos, the only Greek water polo club which has more titles than Olympiacos (38 trophies in the national league – the last one was won in 2006), was the host of the match. But, it couldn’t stop the mighty squad of Olympiacos. The home team scored the opening goal in the game. But, the visitors responded with a 6:0 series for a 6:1 advantage early in the second period. At halftime, Olympiacos gad an 8:3 advantage. Ethnikos ran out of gas for the second half, the visitors dominated and cruised to a 20:6 victory. Kakaris was the top scorer with five goals. Besides him, nine players of the new-old champion found the net: Jokovic 3, Genidounias 3, Dervisis 3, Mitrovic 1, Gounas 1, Mourikis 1, A. Chalyvopoulos 1, Skoumpakis 1, Pappas 1.
