The top three clubs of the Italian Serie A1, Pro Recco, Brescia, and Savona, collected points with no big trouble in the 21st round of the national championships.
Savona hosted fourth-placed Trieste. The teams were in a neck-and-neck race until 3:3. Patchaliev scored to give Savona a 4:3 lead in the 7th minute. Following the halftime break, Savona took control of the game, scoring three unanswered goals and entering the second half with a 7:3 lead. Trieste was unable to recover in the second half. Savona maintained a 4-goal difference, and recorded a 15:11 win. Veteran Pietro Figlioli was Savona’s power engine once again. He found the net five times.
Brescia also had a challenging test, as it faced Roma Vis Nova, which is in 5th place, but with the same number of points as Trieste. Brescia had big ups and downs, but it beat quite convincingly. In the 7th minute, the teams were tied at 3:3. From the end of the first period until the early minutes of the third quarter, Brescia dominated, launching an 8:0 run to take an 11:3 lead. Although Alessandro Bovo’s team allowed Roma to narrow the gap, Brescia’s victory was never in jeopardy. Balzarini stood out, scoring three goals in Brescia’s 14:11 win.
Pro Recco, with four goals from Ben Hallock, beat bottom-placed Catania 17:7.
De Akker kept its hopes alive for a 4th place finish and a spot in the semifinals by narrowly defeating Posillipo 13:12. Posillipo held a slim 10:9 advantage before the final quarter, but the Naples-based team lost its momentum. De Akker took control in the final period, building a 13:11 lead. Although Posillipo managed to halve the deficit with 90 seconds left on the clock, the visitors could not equalize. De Akker’s Bragantini and Posillipo’s Radulovic both topped the scorers’ list with four goals each.
De Akker and Posillipo are tied in points now. Trieste and Roma Vis Nova are just three points ahead of the two, so a very interesting battle for 4th place is in sight.
Telimar climbed to 7th place after beating Ortigia 13:11 in the Sicilian derby.
