Sixteen teams in the pot for Main Round of Euro League

November 21, 2021

Photo: RFEN

After 50 games and 1197 goals across four European cities, we have our 16 teams for the main round of the 2021-2022 Women’s Euro League! In a thoroughly enjoyable week of action, we have seen some real quality in the pool in Europe’s top club competition.

Dynamo Uralochka, CN Terrassa and NC Glyfada qualify from Group A while SIS Roma, CE Mediterrani and FTC Telekom are the top three from Group B. Plebiscito Padova, CN Mataro and NC Vouliagmeni progress from C,  and Astralpool Sabadell, Ekipe Orizzonte and Ethnikos Piraeus make the next round in Group D.

Olympiacos, Dunaujvaros, UVSE and KINEF Kirishi are all also into the next round, which takes place in December.

Group A

The top spot in Group A belongs to Dynamo Uralochka after they smashed Tel Aviv. It was the two Russian senior internationals who were the most prolific with Maria Bersneva and Yulia Lapteva both converted 5 times. Israel’s upcoming star, Alma Yaacobi, scored 4 for ASA, but they have still finished bottom of the group.

Elsewhere, Terrassa had to come from behind to beat NC Glyfada. Beatriz Ortiz secured a hat-trick in the game, with Martina Cardona (2), Nina Ten Broek, Pili Pena, Paula Camus and Paula Leiton all getting on the scoresheet.

Group B

Roma have topped the group but had to work hard to earn a victory in their final qualification game against Lille. Marco Capanna’s side look in very good shape from this round of the Euro League, winning more games than any other team so far (5).

ZVL nearly caused a bit of an upset by almost drawing with Mediterrani. Only a goal four seconds from time from Carla Toha Vilanova (who scored 4 in the game) gave the Spanish side the win. It would have meant very little in terms of the table, but it was certainly a solid effort from the Dutch side.

Ferencvaros have ended their Euro League qualification campaign with an easy win over Sirens and progress to the next round. Szonja Kuna scored 7, while four Fradi players got hat-tricks (Pocze, Kovesdi, Koopman & Valyi).

Group C

Padova are undefeated and finish top of Group C after a relatively comfortable display over the Olympic Nice with Mariia Borisova (4), Martina Gottardo (3) and Elle Armit (3) all securing yet more goals this European campaign. Stefano Posterivo’s side have been fantastic all week  and will feel they can go really far in this competition.

In a game that determined who would finish second in Group C, Mataro came out on top against Vouliagmeni. Despite a two goal lead at half-time, Vouliagmeni levelled the game up at 6-6 going into the last. However, goals from Vivian Sevenich and Bella Markoch in the last period was enough to secure the win, and 2nd place in the group.

The last game of the day of little consequence, Spandau through away a 9-3 lead against BVSC to end up losing 11-12. It was the ill-discipline of the hosts that cost them the game, while Tamara Farkas secured 4 goals in the game – one of which was from a 5m penalty.

Dafne Bettini scored two for Ekipe, as Martina Miceli’s side will be happy with progression from this group.
