Barceloneta won the Spanish Cup for the 13th consecutive season. The Final Eight national cup tournament, officially known as the King’s Cup, was held in Barceloneta’s pool. The hosts defeated Sabadell convincingly in the final game—14:5—to continue their reign.
Sabadell reached the final after two exhausting games in the previous days. It defeated Terrassa and Barcelona in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Both of those matches ended with the same score of 12:10. In contrast, Barceloneta advanced to the final after big wins in both the quarterfinal (22:4 against Mediterrani) and the semifinal (17:7 against Mataro).
Alvaro Granados gave Barceloneta an opening lead in the first possession of the final game, and Sabadell leveled at 1:1 in the middle of the first period. Then, Barceloneta produced a 3:0 run for a 4:1 lead. Sabadell reduced the gap to two goals several times (2:4, 3:5, 4:6) but couldn’t come closer to the favorite. At the finish of the first half, Barceloneta scored two back-to-back goals (Sanahuja and lefthanded Burian) and built a 4-goal lead (8:4). After a balanced third period (1:1), Barceloneta demolished Sabadell in a 5:0 fourth period. Sabadell missed five man-up chances in the final quarter and didn’t avoid a big defeat.
Bernat Sanahuja was the best scorer of the final. He found the net four times. Alvaro Granados, Gergely Burian, and Unai Biel scored two goals each to help Barceloneta record a convincing 14:5 victory. Kanstantin Averka scored two for Sabadell.
