Something big is brewing in Zagreb.
Mladost, once a powerhouse of European water polo with seven Champions League titles, has experienced a decline in recent years. However, the club might be on the brink of a resurgence as it plans to sign ten Croatian players for the 2024-25 season. This impressive roster includes five world champions from Doha who will represent Mladost next season.
Josip Vrlic, Luka Bukic, Konstantin Kharkov, Matias Biljaka, and Ivan Marcelic are all transferring from Split to Sava, while Franko Lazic is joining Mladost from Jug Dubrovnik.
Additionally, Mladost is strengthening its squad with overseas Croatian talent: Ante Vukovic from Marseille, Andrija Basic from Waspo Hannover, and Mislav Vrlic and Ivan Buljubasic from Trieste.
With these ten signings, Mladost not only aims to be competitive in Croatia and win its first title since the 2020-21 season but also dreams of achieving European glory.
How has Mladost managed to attract these top Croatian players? The club has benefited from a €500,000 stimulus aid from the City of Zagreb Government, part of a broader initiative to support professional sports in the city.
With this significant influx of talent, the Croatian league is set to become much more balanced in the 2024-2025 season.
