Attila Biro is no longer the head coach of the Hungarian national female team.
The members of the Presidency of the Hungarian Water Polo Federation voted unanimously in favor of the dismissal of Atila Biro after the team finished 6th at the World Championships in Fukuoka, the Hungarian WP Federation (MVSLZ) announced today.
Biro led Hungary for seven years (2016 – 2013).
Today, the Hungarian MVLSZ’s Presidency met to receive the reports on the World Championships from head coaches Zsolt Varga and Attila Biro. The Board approved the reports from both coaches, but there were discussions among members about the present circumstances. It was decided to enforce a specific clause in Biro’s case, which allows for termination without consequences if the national team fails to finish in the top four at the competition.
“Women’s water polo owes a lot to Attila Biro, as he did a great job at the head of the national team in previous years,” Norbert Madaras, the MVLSZ president, said and added:
“When he took over the team at the end of 2015, the situation seemed critical after the ninth place in the World Championship. He immediately won the European Championship with the girls. After that, many great results were achieved, the highlight being the bronze medal in Tokyo and silver at the World Championship won last year in the home environment, which is an unforgettable memory for all of us. At the same time, last year’s European Championship in Split (5th place – Ed.), and especially the World Championship in Fukuoka, did not go as we had hoped, which would be worthy of the previous excellence and the level of this national team. That’s why the board members thought the team needed a new impetus, which could only be given by a more serious change.”
The Federation will start the negotiations with the possible candidates.
According to the rumors that appeared, some of the candidates for Biro’s successor are Marton Benczur and Tamas Varga, who have coached junior and youth female national teams in the last years.
Under Biro’s guidance, the Hungarians reached the semifinals of major competitions 11 times and won six medals – 2016: gold at the European Championships, 2020: bronze at the European Championships, 2021: silver in the World League and bronze at the Olympic Games, 2022: silver medal at the World Championships and silver in the World League
