A lot of joy for Adriatic clubs

September 22, 2023

Marko Mrsic (Primorac) Photo by Krsto Vulovic/VPSCG

The teams from the cities along the Adriatic coast – Primorje, Primorac and Solaris – had a successful day in the LEN Euro Cup qualifications today.

Primorje Rijeka beat Radnicki Kragujevac (8:6) on home field in the first round of Group D. Solaris from Sibenik edged out Oradea 13:12 in the same group.

Primorac Kotor, the host of Group H, earned two points after a penalty shootout in the match against Terrassa (14:12) and got a big step closer to the next round.

There were thrilling matches in other groups.

Sabac beat Noisy-le-Sec convincingly in one of the derbies in Group A. Tourcoing downed Szolnok in the opening match in Group C. Reigning champion Vasas conceded seven goals in the first 13 minutes, but recorded a big win over Mataro in Budapest…

2023/24 LEN Euro Cup, Qualifications, Day 2

Group A (Sabac), Round 2

Dinamo Bucharest – Ortigia 10:13 (1:2, 2:5, 3:3, 4:3)
Dinamo Bucharest: Radu 3, Bindea 2, Kari 2, Sachetti 1, Lutescu 1, Vranceanu 1.
Ortigia: Inaba 5, Ferrero 3, La Rosa 2, Di Luciano 1, Condemi 1, Napolitano 1.

Sabac – Noisy-le-Sec 13:9 (5:2, 4:3, 4:2, 0:2)
Sabac Elixir: Toholj 3, Krug 2, Dragovic 2, Repanovic 1, Koptsev 1, Barac 1, Stanic 1, Stojanovic 1, Korac 1.
Noisy-le-Sec: Bjorch 3, Ondo Methogo 1, Chaplet 1, Caumette 1, Krapic 1, Matkovic 1, V.Rasovic 1.

Valis Vega bye

Many expected that Ortigia would convincingly defeat Dinamo, but only three goals separated the rivals at the end of the match. Still, Ortigia controlled the match and the result and the Italians’ win wasn’t in danger. Dinamo scored an opening goal, but Ortigia responded with a 6:0 run to earn a 6:1 lead in the middle of the second period. Ortigia didn’t let Dinamo come closer than three goals in the rest of the game. The top scorer was Japanese Yusuke Inaba with five goals, but it should be mentioned that Dinamo’s veteran Cosmin Radu found the net three times.

Sabac displayed an excellent performance in the first half of the derby. The hosts killed all the suspense quickly. The teams traded the goals in the first six minutes (2:2). Then Sabac made a 5:0 run and went to 7:2. That series set the tone of the match. Noisy couldn’t recover from that shock and endanger Sabac’s win. The hosts had a 6-goal lead in the third period (11:5, 12:6, 13:7). The French narrowed the distance in the final quarter.

Standings: 1. Sabac 6 pts (2 games), 2. Ortigia 6 (2), 3. Noisy-le-Sec 0 (1), 4. Valis 0 (1), 5. Dinamo 0 (2)

Mataro: Castro 4, Ivaylov Patchaliev 2, Negus 2, Flaque 1, Magrina 1, O. Aguirre 1.

Home team BVSC didn’t display a good defensive play, but it beat Ludwigsburg. BVSC’s 6:1 series between the 7th and 15th minute, which brought them a jump from 3:3 to 9:4, was a turning point.

As expected, the reigning Euro Cup champion, Vasas, opened the campaign with a win, but it needed a lot of time to secure the points. Mataro kept up with the Hungarians for almost two quarters. In the 14th minute, the score was 7:7. Vasas closed the first half with four unanswered goals in less than three minutes for an 11:7 lead. The Hungarians tightened their defense after the middle break and ruled the field in the third quarter.

Group C (Tourcoing), Round 1

Szolnok – Tourcoing 10:12 (2:3, 4:3, 2:2, 2:4)

Trieste: Mladossich 5, M.Vrlic 3, Valentino 2, Bini 2, Mezzarobba 2, Dasic 1, Podgornik 1, petronio 1,

Tourcoing defeated Szolnok in the derby thanks to a great start in the fourth period. After three quarters, the score was 8:8. Tourcoing scored four unanswered goals in the first six minutes of the final quarter and stormed to a 12:8 lead. Szolnok reduced the gap with two goals in the 32nd minute.

Trieste left no chance to Pays d’Aix. The other French club at the tournament couldn’t find the net until the 17th minute, when Peisson converted a penalty. But, the Italians scored eight goals before that.

Group D (Rijeka), Round 1

Solaris – Oradea 13:12 (4:3, 1:3, 3:3, 5:3)
Solaris: Petkovic 4, Pelicaric 3, D.Akrap 2, R.Akrap 2, Jakovcevic 1, Burburan 1.

Solaris produced a 4:0 run in less than three minutes and took a 12:11 lead in the 30th minute. Immediately after, Oradea leveled at 12:12. The match didn’t enter a penalty shootout. Still, one penalty shot was decisive. Solaris earned a shot from the 5m line with 44 seconds to go. Pelicaric converted it to the final score – 13:12.

Photo: KVK Radnicki

Even though Primorje is the host of the tournament, Radnicki was the favorite in the derby game, but the Kragujevac-based side left the pool empty-handed. After a low-scoring first half, Radnicki led 3:2. Early in the second half, Sulc doubled the Serbs’ advantage to 4:2. However, Primorje responded with a 4:0 run and turned around a 2-goal deficit to a 6:4 lead (25th minute). Radnicki leveled at 6:6 shortly after. Still, Primorje had the last laugh. Dutch Kas Te Riele added his fourth goal to make it 7:6 with 90 seconds to go.

Veteran Darko Brguljan set the final score in the very last second. He sent the ball into the empty net, because Radnicki’s goalkeeper, Todorovski, joined his teammates in the last possession, but the referees whistled a turnover foul.

Zsombor and Bendeguz Ekler led Hnved to a 7-goal win over White Sharks. Panionios convincingly beat Tenerife in a match with 29 exclusions (Tenerife committed 17, and Panionios 12 personal fouls).

Standings: 1. Panionios 6 (2 games), 2. OSC 3 (1), 3. Honved 3 (1), 4. White Sharks 0 (2), 5. Tenerife 0 (2).

Group F (Duisburg), Round 2

Sete – Savona 8:16 (1:2, 2:5, 3:5, 2:4)
Sete:Van den Burg 4, Gomes Da Silva 3, Debiais 1.
Savona: Vavic 3, Guidi 3, Patchaliev 2, Figlioli 2, Rizzo 2, Erdelyi 2, Rocchi 1, Djurdjic 1.

ASC Duisburg – Telimar 8:14 (2:2, 1:3, 0:7, 5:2)

Mladost fought bravely in the first half of the game against Apollon. The Croats went ahead twice (4:3 and 5:4), but they couldn’t follow the rhythm imposed by the Greek club in the second half.

Host Barcelona ran over OSC Potsdam. It’s most likely that the duel between the Spaniards and the Greeks will decide 1st place, and both teams will go through.

Panathinaikos: Alvertis 3, Nikolaidis 2, Dermitzakis 2, Stevenson 1, Braimis 1, Chatzigoulas 1.

Waspo Hannover bye

Primorac emerged victorious in yesterday’s match against Panathinaikos and furthered its chances of securing a spot in the LEN Euro Cup group stage by defeating Terrassa today. The game was a rollercoaster ride, with both teams taking turns in the lead. Primorac had a two-goal advantage – twice in the fourth period (8:6 and 9:7). Terrassa managed to level the score with two goals in the last two minutes, resulting in a 9:9 tie. However, Primorac had stronger nerves during the shootout. The hosts’ goalkeeper, ALeksandro Kralj, saved a shot in the fourth round while all of their players scored, securing two crucial points for the Kotor-based team.

The Greek derby ended after a shootout, too. Panathinaikos played excellently in defense in the first three periods. It led 5:2 and 6:3 in the third quarter. However, Peristeri was able to come back. It equalized at 8:8 (31st minute). That was the last goal in regular time. Peristeri handled it better in a shootout.

Standings: 1. Primorac 5 (2), 2. Waspo 98 3 (1), 3. Peristeri 2 (1), 4. Panathinaikos 1 (2), 5. Terrassa 1 (2).
