Apollon saves point with last-gasp goal; convincing wins for group leaders

There were a lot of goals and excitement in the 11th round of the Greek Championships.

Olympiacos and Vouliagmeni continued their unbeaten run. Olympiacos convincingly beat Panathinaikos in the big match of the day in Group A.

The most thrilling match of the day took place in Glyfada. The home team Glyfada and Apollon Smyrnis shared the points in a festival of goals – 18:18. The visitors from Athens, the 2nd-placed team in Group B, saved a point with a literally last-second goal.

Group A

Panathinaikos – Olympiacos 7:15 (1:1, 2:3, 2:5, 2:6)

Olympiacos, one of just a few unbeaten teams in all competitions in Europe this season, beat Panathinaikos in a game that was a derby, considering the standings (Panathinaikos is in 3rd place). Still, everything but Olympiacos’ victory would be a surprise. However, Panathinaikos kept up with Olympiacos in the first half. After the first period, the score was 1:1. The Red Whites entered the second half with a slim 4:3 lead. But the decisive moments came in the first five minutes of the second half. The visitors scored three goals in a row and went to 7:3.

Chios made a big comeback to beat 4th-placed AEK on the home field. The visitors from Athens were 4:1 and 5:2 up. Chios leveled at 5:5 at the beginning of the third quarter. Still, AEK earned a 7:5 advantage before the final period. But Chios dominated in the fourth period, scoring three unanswered goals for a 8:7 victory.

An encounter between Ethnikos and Panionios produced 27 goals. Panionios, the third-placed team in the group, led for most of the time. However, Ethnikos chased the visitors throughout the match. Before the final quarter, Panionios had only a one-goal lead (10:9). Still, led by an experienced Alexandros Gounas, Panionios secured a solid 15:12 win.

Ydraikos caught up with Ethnikos in points with a big 13:6 victory over Ydraikos.

The highlight of the day in Group B was an encounter between Glyfada and Apollon Smyrnis, with 36 goals. Apollon arrived in Glyfada as the favorite, but it earned only one point. Moreover, Glyfada was closer to a victory. Apollon, which had problems with ill players, secured a draw with a last-gasp goal. Glyfada had a 10:8 advantage at the middle break, and doubled the gap before the final eight minutes (15:11). But, Apollon managed to come back. The visitors scored seven and conceded three goals in the fourth quarter. But, just a minute before the end, Glyfada was still in front (18:16). Gardikas made it 17:18 at 00:34. Nikola Bogdanovic beat the buzzer. Just a second before the end of the game, he netted his 9th goal and Apollon secured a point – 18:18. The best scorer in the home team was Grigorios Giannopoulos with seven goals.

Vouliagmeni continued its winning streak, downing Chania (21:7).

Peristeri defeated Palaio Faliro 10:7. Peristeri, the home team in this match, took a 6:3 lead. Still, Palaio Faliro leveled at 7:7 midway through the third quarter. Peristeri tightened its defense and scored three straight goals in the remaining time.

PAOK found it easy to beat bottom-placed Ilysiakos (14:6) and continued sharing the 3rd and 4th place with Peristeri.
