There were a lot of derbies on Day 9 of the Champions League, but the biggest one didn’t offer a lot of excitement. Barceloneta completely outplayed Olympiacos in the big game of the day, played in Piraeus, – 15:9. After this victory, Barceloneta remains lonely atop of Group A, with a point more than 2nd-placed Jug and three more than Olympiacos.

Jug recorded a valuable away win, as well as Barceloneta. The Croats beat Szolnok 16:12.

Szolnok fell from 4th to 5th place. Jadran Herceg Novi defeated Jadran Split14:11 and climbed into 4th position.

Spandau Berlin also kept a chance to reach the Final Eight. The Germans defeated Sintez Kazan 15:8.

Champions League 2019/20, Day 9

Olympiacos and Barceloneta shared the 1st and 2nd place before Day 9. Their first encounter this season, played in Barcelona in December, ended in a draw (11:11). So, few could expect that the gap between these great teams would be six goals after the last buzzer. But, the visitors deserved the convincing win, as they dominated from the beginning of the game.

The Spaniards scored the first three goals in the match, and they had a 3:0 advantage already in the 4th minute. Stefan Mitrovic converted a man-up for 1:3 in the 5th minute, but another 3:0 series came from the visiting team. Barceloneta went 6:1 up deep into the third period . In the opening minutes of the third quarter, Barceloneta built a 6-goal lead (8:2, 9:3), but Olympiacos reduced the gap with three unanswered goals in the last three minutes of the third quarter (6:9). After the last break, the Spaniards retook control and went 11:6 up. Barceloneta, led by Felipe Perrone, even had a seven-goal lead (15:8), but Gounas scored a consolation goal for Olympiacos 17 seconds from the end.

Barceloneta’s ace Felipe Perrone was the best scorer of the match with five goals. Alberto Munarriz netted four. Stefan Mitrovic scored three goals for Olympiacos.

Jug was leading throughout the match, while Szolnok was coming back from time to time. Jug opened the game with a 3:0 lead, but the hosts managed to equalize before the first break (4:4) and again early in the second quarter (5:5). Jug produced a 3:0 rush to regain a 3-goal lead (8:5). The Hungarians came near to the Croatian team in the 14th minute (7:8). In the middle of the third period, Jug took a 12:8 lead and after that, the visitors’ victory wasn’t in danger. They didn’t let Szolnok come back. Jug even had a 6-goal advantage (16:10). Szolnok scored the last two goals in the match in the last minute.

Loren Fatovic and Hrvoje Benic led Jug this evening. Each scored four goals.

Jadran HN – Jadran S 14:11 (4:4, 3:2, 3:2, 4:3)

Jadran Carine Herceg Novi: Vucurovic 5, Averka 3, Banicevic 2, Popadic 1, Radovic 1, Brkic 1, Petkovic 1.

In the first quarter, the visitors had a 3:1 lead, but the Herceg Novi-based side caught the Croats before the end of the period (4:4). In the second quarter, the visiting side went ahead twice(5:4 and 6:5). However, the home team entered the third quarter with a minimal advantage (7:6), while it doubled the lead in the following eight minutes (10:8). In the middle of the fourth quarter, Jadran Herceg Novi earned a safe 13:9 advantage and secured the victory.
