BVSC secured a spot in the playoffs one round before the end of the regular season in the Hungarian League,

As expected, BVSC easily defeated Tatabanya 18:4 in the 29th round and cemented 4th place.

The top four ranked sides will qualify for the playoffs. Besides BVSC, Szolnok, Ferencvaros, and OSC will continue the battle for the title in the playoffs, but everything is still open in the hunt for the 1st place. The situation will be clearer tomorrow. In the last match of Day 29, Szolnok will host Ferencvaros on Thursday. Szolnok needs a point in tomorrow’s game to keep the top of the table.

Szolnok has collected 80 points so far (28 games), OSC is in second place with 75 points (29 games). Ferencvaros also has 75 points (28 games). OSC and Ferencvaros will face off on Sunday in the 30th round. Szolnok will meet KSI in Round 30. So, even if the leader loses tomorrow, it will probably finish the league in 1st place.

But, the games Szolnok – Ferencvaros, and OSC – Ferencvaros aren’t important only for the final standings, since the points won in the mutual encounters in the regular season will be carried to the playoffs.

That means, if Szolnok and BVSC play each other in the semifinals, Szolnok will enter the series with 4, and BVSC with one point (Szolnok beat BVSC in the first half of the season, the second game was ended in a draw). A team that wins 7 points in the semifinals will advance to the final. There are no ties in the playoffs. If there is no winner after the 4th quarter, the match will be continued with a penalty shootout.

Szolnok – Ferencvaros on Thursday

BVSC taught a lesson to the bottom-ranked Tatabanya. The Budapest-based side, led by Matyas Pasztor (5 goals) and Tamas Gyarfas (4), opened the match with a 6:0 lead. By the end of the first half, the visitors had a 9:1 advantage and secured the three points.

BVSC maintained a 4-point advantage ahead of 5th-placed Vasas, which won’t play in the playoffs, but it qualified for the LEN Euro Cup next season. Vasas traveled to Debrecen and demolished the hosts. Vasas’s defense was superb. The visitors recorded a 19:1 victory. Vasas built a 12:0 lead before Debrecen scored its only goal in the match. That happened 40 seconds before the end of the third quarter.

OSC also achieved an away win. OSC played against Eger, and the match was exciting for more than two quarters. Eger started well, with a 3:1 lead. However, OSC, the favorite in this match, responded with four goals to earn a 5:3 lead (9th minute). OSC kept the advantage until the third quarter. The hosts equalized twice in the third period (8:8 and 9:9). After that, OSC, led by Krisztian Manhercz, produced a 5:0 run and built a safe 14:9 lead. Eger couldn’t come back .

An encounter between UVSE and Kaposvar was the most interesting match of the day. UVSE had a 5:1 lead, but Kaposvar managed to come back. The visitors earned a 2-goal lead early in the fourth period (8:6). UVSE equalized – 8:8. Two minutes from the end Oliver Kovacs gave Kaposvar a 9:8 lead, but David Belenyesi saved a point for UVSE with an action goal with 71 seconds to go.

KSI and Tatabanya will be relegated to the B League, while Debrecen will play in the relegation playoffs.
