BZC surprises ZV De Zaan; The Hague registers first victory

Dutch water polo league

This season, BZC is emerging as the giant killer in the Dutch Eredivisie. After beating AZC last week, the team from Borculo was too strong for ZV De Zaan this week. A painful loss for the team from Zaandam, as a victory had resulted in the lead in the ranking. At the bottom, the tension is also back after the first victory of Water Polo Den Haag.

BZC provided a new surprise in the small pool in Borculo. Zeno Reuten’s team defeated ZV De Zaan, who could have taken the lead after the victory on Saturday against PSV (9:16). The match was completely in balance for a long time, but when Bilal Gbadamassi and Frank Kormelinck put BZC at 11:9 in the last period, the visitors could not get over that. Thomas Lucas took care of 11:10, but ZV De Zaan didn’t get any closer.

On Saturday BZC had also won. And again with only one goal difference (12:13). SVH was the victim. After the 12:11 by Max van Genabeek, SVH could smell the victory in the last period, but in the last minute, Bilal Gbadamassi and Mika Smelt turned the score in favor of BZC. Because Waterpolo Den Haag won for the first time (14:10 against ZPB), The Hague is now rid of the hateful zero. In the second and fourth period, Mark van Engelen’s team made the difference. Competitor for the last place De Ham did lose. Leader UZSC was much too strong with 7:23. As a result, Water Polo Den Haag and De Ham now both have three points and The Hague suddenly has spot twelve of SVH in its sights. SVH only has one point more, although Petar Ivosevic’s team still has some games to catch up with due to corona.

AZC recovered after last bad weekend with a 16:9 victory in the regional derby against ZVL-1886. The team from Alphen aan den Rijn is now in place 3, but feels the hot breath of ZPC Amersfoort in its neck. With a 13:10 victory over Het Ravijn, the team from Amersfoort did good business for a place in the top-4 that gives a home advantage in the play-offs. But GZC Donk, BZC, Het Ravijn and even Polar Bears also claim that. In short, the coming weeks promise a lot of excitement.
