A Croatian coach Dragan Matutinovic has been appointed as a head coach of the male Russian national team. Matutinovic will replace Sergey Evstingeev.
Also, Matutinovic became Dynamo Moscow head coach, where he replaces Evgeny Zhilyaev.
He has a great experience as a head coach of several national teams. He led male Spanish Team to the silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Later, he was coaching male national teams of France, Slovakia and Turkey, the Chinese female national team, while he was leading the Croatian female team at the 2018 European Championships in Barcelona. Since last year’s European Championships he was a “free agent”.
This is a big challenge for me. I wanted to start a new coaching job and I will have a lot to do in Russia. I will lead the Russians at the 2020 European Championships in Budapest in January, but not in the first match in the World League match against Hungary next week. The Russian team has a lot of potentials and great players. Some of them are in the Croatian clubs, like Merkulov in Jug and Kharkov in Mladost Zagreb – Matutinovic said
Matutinovic signed a one-year contract with a possibility of renewal of the cooperation after the 1st year.
