Euro Cup semi-finalists return to league action with victories

February 16, 2023

After an excellent showing from three Hungarian sides in the Euro Cup, they all returned to domestic action successfully.

Five goals from Dorottya Szilagyi helped Eger hold off BVSC in a dynamic match at Aladar Bitskey, meanwhile UVSE put in a dominant performance to defeat Third District 14-5, with ten consecutive goals in the second half. League leaders Ferencvaros outclassed Szentes, winning 21-8.

In the clash at the bottom of the league, Gyor defeated Tatabanya 8-4 to clinch their second win of the season. A hat-trick from Kata Kurucz propelled Zsolt Vogel’s team to the victory against fellow strugglers Tatabanya.

Dunuajvaros were not in action on Wednesday, but defeated Szeged earlier today 17-6.

ZF Eger 15 – 12 BVSC-Zuglo (3-2, 4-3, 4-3, 4-4)

Eger: A. Kiss, P. Jancso, I. Borsi 2, R. Parkes 2, D. Molnar, Z. Katona, E. Weston, D. Czigany 3, B. Kekesi 1, F. Bodi, C. Szellak 2, D. Szilagyi 5, S. Szilagyi, M. Dulic

BVSC: K. Kakas, F. Fekete 2, K. Meszaros Farkas 1, R. Toth, C. Dobos 1, L. Bereczki, T. Kolarova 3, L. Urvari 1, N. Kele, R. Toth-Deme, A. Games 3, Z. Polak, Z. Hajdu

Eger, fresh off the back of their Euro Cup heroics at the weekend, came away with three points at home against BVSC in a 15-12 win.

Dorottya Szilagyi was once again Eger’s source of inspiration, finding five goals in the match, with Hungarian veteran Dora Czigany putting away three scores.

The game was a tight one between the teams in 4th and 5th place, but it was Eger, who eventually held off BVSC despite a strong effort from Mercedes Stieber’s team.

Eger edged ahead after eight minutes thanks to two of Szilagyi’s goals. BVSC equalised, and held on during the second quarter, but Eger was up by two scores at the half-time break.

Into the second half, Csenge Szellak extended Eger’s lead to three goals (8-5), Ilona Borsi made it four (12-8), before Dora Czigany secured the points with her hat-trick score (15-10). The Yellows from Zuglo added two late scores to save face, but the day belonged to Eger.

GYVSE Gyor 8 – 4 Tatabanya (2-1, 1-1, 3-1, 2-1)

Gyor: A. Horvath, R. Radli, Z. Finta, Z. Galicz, J. Vaszari, D. Torok 1, V. Nemeth, V. Huszti, D. Huszti 2, A. Kiss, M. Szedlak 2, I. Droth, K. Kurucz 3, L. Torma

Tatabanya: D. Kovacs, H. Zantleitner, N. Zantleitner, P. Zink, B. Orban 1, E. Becsey, S. Felkai, E. Rajna 2, J. Kovacs 1, L. Soti, K. Perjesi, D. Kovacs, G. Szombathelyi

Gyor have secured three big points in the OB I, defeating Tatabanya 8-4 to grab their second victory of the season.

Three goals from Kata Kurucz led Zsolt Vogel’s team to a rare victory, against fellow strugglers Tatabanya.

Both teams were in desperate need of points, and it was Gyor who drew first blood, taking a slender lead into the end of the first quarter. Tatabanya, however, refused to go down without a fight and battled back to level the game at 3-3 early in the third quarter.

However, Gyor, who were the more dynamic of the two sides on the day, carried the greater threat. They eventually took a 6-3 lead into the last quarter thanks to scores by Torok, Dora Huszti and Monika Szedlak’s penalty.

Tatabanya valiantly attempted to mount a comeback, but their efforts were ultimately undone by two quick-fire goals from the outstanding Kurucz, who delivered a decisive blow to Tatabanya’s hopes. The result was a bitter pill to swallow for Krisztina Zantleitner’s side, which had previously beaten Gyor 7-6 earlier in the season.

Tatabanya will be eager to turn their fortunes around, having not picked up any points since their draw with Keruleti in November.

III Keruleti TVE 5 – 14 UVSE (1-1, 3-3, 0-5, 1-5)

Third District: T. Torkos, D. Kovacs, A. Keresztes 1, V. Kiss, P. Kiss, T. Zold, H. Illes 1, B. Fodor, P. Kudella 2, N. Koltay 1, R. Hajdu, K. Gasparics, A. Gyongyossy, Z. Czegledi

UVSE: A. Magyari, T. Aubeli 2, E. Macsai, Z. Koka, G. Szucs 1, E. Varro, V. Baksa, K. Farago 2, P. Szegedi 3, R. Irmes 1, Z. Lendvay 2, K. Peresztegi-Nagy 2, S. Keszthelyi 1, E. Karpati

UVSE sailed smoothly across the Danube to the Third District, showcasing a dominant and commanding performance in the second half that secured a resounding 14-5 victory.

Goals flew in from left to right, as the attacking prowess of Panni Szegedi (3), Farago (2), Aubeli (2), Lendvay (2), and Peresztegi-Nagy provided the goals needed for the Lilac’s to take the points.

Kerulet put up a commendable fight, with the teams neck and neck at 4-4 by halftime. However, the tides turned in the second half as Denes Lukacs’s team succumbed to Ujpest’s relentless offence, conceding ten consecutive goals and giving way to Hungary’s reigning champions.

UVSE’s triumph puts them level on points with Dunaujvaros, while DFVE still has a game in hand. UVSE play again on Friday against Szeged.

Szentes 8 – 21 FTC Telekom (2-6, 2-6, 0-5, 4-4)

Szentes: J. Futsi, V. Varga 1, A. Hevesi 1, K. Macsai, V. Dankina 2, J. Dobos, R. Bicskei, D. Samsonova, V. Bonca 1, R. Korom, H. Katai-Benedek 1, F. Toth 2, L. Horvath, N. Heri

FTC: B. Neszmely, B. Vosseberg 2, Z. Mate 2, G. Gurisatti 3, P. Pocze 1, T. Farkas 1, D. Leimeter 2, A. Illes 1, S. Kuna 2, P. Petik 1, D. Toth Csabai 2, D. Domsodi 2, E. Millot 2, L. Greso

League leaders Ferencvaros stormed past Szentes, routing their opponents 21-8 in Csongrad County.

Every outfield player netted at least one goal for Fradi, in a totally dominant performance. The leading scorer in the match, also happens to be the leading scorer in the league, with Greta Gurisatti’s hat-trick today extending her tally up to 41 strikes in 11 games.

Fradi are certainly making waves in the league with their impressive performances, and their trophy cabinet is already gleaming after their recent Hungarian Cup victory in December. However, the excitement doesn’t end there for the league leaders, as they are now gearing up to take on the formidable Plebiscito in the Euro Cup semi-final.
