The first qualification round of the LEN Euro Cup was completed today.

Three countries will have two clubs each in the Qualification Round 2: Spain, Hungary and France.

The teams which advanced to the Qualification Round 2 as the group winners are: Mediterrani (Spain), Miskolc (Hungary), Eger (Hungary) and Montpellier (France). Besides these four sides, Mataro (Spain), Solaris (Croatia), Noisy-le-Sec (France) and Ortigia (Italy) will play in the next round.

In the second round, the teams will be drawn into two groups. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals, where they will be joined by the four losing teams from the Champions League Qualification Round 3.

LEN Euro Cup, Qualification Round I, Day 3

Mataro trashed Antwerp in the first match of the day, but nothing was decided before the encounter between Mediterrani and Mornar.

Mornar, the home team, had to beat Mediterrani by a goal to take a ticket for the second round. But, the Spaniards ruined the hosts’ hopes quickly. Mediterrani jumped to a 5:1 lead early in the second quarter and maintained the gap until the end. So, both Spanish teams went through. Mediterrani clinched the first place, while Mataro finished second.

The Serbian club was just one goal down at halftime (1:2) and kept up with the big favourites until the middle of the last quarter. Than, Noisy started “flying”. By the middle of the last period, the French netted 5 unanswered goals. They built a 12:6 lead and there was no way back for Posillipo, which won the LEN Euro Cup five years ago.

Miskolc finished the tournament with a 3-0 record, as it easily beat host Valletta today.

The French team entered the last period with a 12:10 lead and it added two goals in the last period, for a 14:10 win.

Ortigia had no problems beating Apoel and qualified for the Qualification Round 2.
