Exciting Sicilian derby in Palermo; clash of champions postponed

The most anticipated game of the Italian League 10th round was supposed to be the clash of the champions. An encounter between title-holder Brescia and European champion Pro Recco was scheduled for Saturday. But, a player of Brescia has tested positive for coronavirus before the game. Therefore, the match has been postponed, the Italian Federation announced today.

But, there were interesting games in Round 10. The LEN Euro Cup semifinalists – Telimar and Ortigia – faced off in the Sicilian derby. Telimar recorded an 11:9 victory.

Trieste produced a big comeback to beat Catania (11:9). Roma recorded the first win in the season beating Lazio in the Rome derby.

Brescia – Pro Recco postponed

Telimar got off to a great start in the Sicilian derby. The Palermo-based team stunned Ortigia with a 3:0 lead in the first three minutes. Ortigia’s Ferrero broke the hosts’ series in the fourth minute, but Telimar responded with two goals for 5:1. Still, Ortigia halved the deficit before the middle break (5:7). Telimar’s American Max Irving converted a penalty to give the hosts an 8:5 advantage in the 17th minute. But Ortigia replied with three goals in a row and leveled at 8:8 in the 23rdminute.

Irving opened the fourth quarter with a goal from a power-play advantage (9:8), Ferrero equalized (9:9) in the 27th minute. However, the visitors didn’t go further. Telimar scored the last two goals in the game for an 11:9 victory. Ortigia suffered the first loss in the season

Salerno defeated Anzio and kept 7th place in the table. Anzio had a 3:2 advantage in the middle of the first period. Then, Salerno scored five unanswered goals and earned a 6:3 advantage. The visitors controlled the match and recorded a 13:9 victory.

As expected, Trieste defeated Catania, but it was a very strange game, with two completely different halves. Catania had a 9:3 lead in the 16th minute. Seven seconds before the middle break, Trieste’s Inaba converted a man-up for 4:9. Trieste kept Catania goalless in the second half, while it netted seven goals for an 11:9 win.

Iren Quinto and Posillipo were in a neck-and-neck race throughout the first half, but the hosts took control in the second half. They recorded an 8:5 win to jump from 12th to 9th place in the table.

The Rome derby, Roma – Lazio, was a clash between the teams which were winless before the 10th round. Roma edged out its neighbors for the first victory in the season. Roma had a 9:7 advantage before the final quarter. Lazio reduced the gap to one twice in the fourth quarter (8:9 and 9:10). Roma earned a 3-goal advantage two minutes before the end (12:9). Lazio came close once more in the 32nd minute (11:12), but it couldn’t equalize.

Metanopoli kept with Savona until the first break. The favorite dominated in the remaining three quarters (18:6).
