Ferencvaros, Eger, Vasas, and OSC join Szolnok

After the second day of the second phase of the Hungarian Cup, five teams have qualified for the upper group of the third stage (1st-8th place) and will continue the battle for the trophy.

Szolnok secured its place among the top 8 teams yesterday, while Ferencvaros, Eger, Vasas, and OSC joined Szolnok today.

The remaining three tickets will be distributed tomorrow.

The competition in the White group (Szentes) is finished, while the rest of the games in the Blue, Red, and Green groups will be played on Sunday.

2020/21 Hungarian Cup, second stage, Day 2

White group (Szentes)

Szolnok – KSI 14:4 (4:2, 3:0, 3:1, 4:1)

Szolnok: Angyal 4, A. Nagy 3, Szeghalmi 2, Drasovic 2, Pijetlovic 2, Filipovic 1
KSI: Peto 2, Gabor 1, A. Nagy 1.

Szentes – Eger 6:8 (1:1, 1:2, 3:3, 1:2)

Szentes: Lajko 3, Matyok 2, Fulop 1
Eger: Murisic 3, Torok 1, Szalai 1, B. Baksa 1, B. Lorincz 1, Radli 1.

Played on Friday: Szolnok – Szentes 17:5, Eger – KSI 22:12, KSI – Szentes 8:11, Eger – Szolnok 9:15.

The highlight of the tournament in Szentes was the encounter between the home team and Eger, which was decisive for the 2nd place. After a lot of twists and turns, Eger celebrated a win. In the middle of the third period, Szentes had a slim 5:4 advantage. Then, Eger scored three unanswered goals, to earn a 7:5 lead with 04:32 remaining on the clock and that proved vital for Eger’s win.

Szolnok continued its winning streak easily beating KSI.

Final standings: 1. Szolnok 18, 2. Eger 9, 3. Szentes 9, 4. KSI 0.

Red group (Budapest)

UVSE-Debrecen 9:5 (2:2, 2:1, 2:1, 3:1)

Debrecen: P. Macsi 2, Oltean 2, Zsilak 1.

Ferencvaros-Honved 13:8 (2:2, 4:1, 3:2, 4:3)

Ferencvaros: Fountoulis 4, Vamos 3, Sz. Jansik 2, Vendel Vigvari 2, Fekete 1, Constantin-Bicari 1.
Honved: Hosnyanszky 3, Simon 2, Ekler 2, Fejos 1.

UVSE – Ferencvaros 8:14 (1:5, 0:5, 3:1, 4:3)

The derby of the Red group, which has been played in the “Alfred Hajos” pool on the Margaret Sziget, was the match between the European champion Ferencvaros and Honved. Honved dictated the pace in the opening minutes and gained a 2:1 lead. Early in the second period, Ferencvaros had a 4:2 advantage. Honved reduced the gap quickly after Ferencvaros’ 4th goal (4:3). But, Ferencvaros responded with four straight goals. It went 8:3 up in the third minute of the 3rd quarter and controlled the game until the end. Ioannis Fountoulis with 4 goals was the top scorer of the match. Marton Vamos netter three goals, as well as Norbert Hosnyanszky, one of the most experienced Honved’s players.

UVSE managed to beat Debrecen and kept a chance to reach the spot among the top eight teams, but it has to defeat Honved in tomorrow’s third round.

The afternoon session offered less excitement since Ferencvaros and Honved recorded convincing wins. Ferencvaros secured the 1st place.

Blue group (Tatabanya)

OSC –BVSC 10:7 (3:2, 2:0, 4:3, 1:2)

BVSC: Gyarfas 3, Czigany 1, P. Kovacs 1, Sugar 1, M. Nagy 1.

PVSK–Tatabanya 14:8 (3:1, 3:2, 4:4, 4:1)

PVSK Pecs: M. Kolozsi 4, Solyom 3, Csaba 2, Reisz 2, Csorba 1, Zerinvary 1, Gaszt 1.

OSC cemented the 1st place in the group and secured the ticket for the Group I (1st-8th place) of the third phase with victories over BVSC and PVSK Pecs.

OSC defeated BVSC 10:7 in the first match of the day. OSC dominated from the beginning and went 8:2 up deep in the third period. But, BVSC started coming back step-by-step. In the 28th minute, BVSC reduced the gap to two goals (7:9). But, OSC didn’t let BVSC go further. In the 29th minute, Kristof Varnai hit the back of the net for the final result.

Other today’s games were one-sided contests. On Sunday, OSC will play against Tatabanya in the match that has no importance for the final standings. The encounter between BVSC and PVSK will answer who will qualify for the Group I of the third phase, along with OSC.

Green group (Szeged)

The competition in the group in Szeged has started this afternoon. Four games will be played tomorrow, but Vasas already booked its ticket for the Group I of the third phase.

Vasas, led by Bence Batori, ran over Miskolc and secured at least the 2nd place in the group. It will be a huge surprise if Vasas doesn’t remain atop. All other teams still have chances to reach the 2nd place.

Standings: 1. Vasas 12, 2. Szeged 6, 3. Miskolc 4, 4. Kaposvar 1.

Third stage (August 6 – 9)

Group I (1st-8th place): Blue 1, Blue 2, White 1, White 2, Red 1, Red 2, Green 1, Green 2
The 1st-placed teams from the 2nd stage will face the 2nd-placed sides. The teams which were in the same group of the Stage 2 will not meet, but they will carry the score of their encounter in the 2nd stage.

Group II (9th – 16th place): Blue 3, Blue 4, White 3, White 4, Red 3, Red 4, Green 3, Green 4
The 3rd-placed teams from the 2nd stage will face the 4th-placed sides. The teams which were in the same group of the Stage 2 will not meet, but they will bring the score of their encounter in the 2nd stage.

Fourth stage (August 12 – 13)

The Cup will be finished in Budapest in the middle of August. The fourth stage is a knock-out round.

August 12

Semifinals 1st -4th place: I.1 – I.4 and I.2 – I.3.
Semifinals 5th – 8th place: I.5 – I.8 and I.6 – I.7.
Semifinals 9th – 12th place: II.1 – II.4 and II. 3 – II.4
