First win The Hague (men), ZV De Zaan remains leader (women)

December 6, 2021

Last weekend there were many matches in the Dutch league. The men’s teams played once and the women twice. It resulted in the first victory for Water Polo The Hague.

On Saturday, the differences in the men’s Eredivisie were very small. Only UZSC and Het Ravijn won big. The other games ended with the smallest possible difference. Leader AZC narrowly beat GZC Donk. In Alphen aan den Rijn it was 12-11. AZC lost a small lead and when Mart van der Weijden made the 9-8 just before the last quarter, it was a very exciting final. A minute before the end, Stan van den Heuvel made 11-11 from and the surprise seemed complete, but international Jesse Nispeling thought otherwise. With 29 seconds left on the clock, he became the match winner.

ZPC Amersfoort only secured the victory against ZVL-1886 in the last period: 13-14. A seven-hit by Sebastiaan van Mil and a winning goal by the top scorer in the Eredivisie Gergely Palotas (his 46th!) ensured that ZPC Amersfoort could return home with the winning points.

Because Polar Bears surprisingly won against ZV De Zaan (13-12), the team from Ede is now breathing down the Amersfoorters for third place. Polar Bears straightened out in the second period. After that, the teams barely separated. Tarik Scherrenburg finally brought relief twenty seconds before the end with his 13-11.

ZPB is on fire. With an 11-12 victory over De Ham, Arjan Silvis’ team recorded its fourth win in a row. The victory had to come from a long way. It was only at the end of the third period that ZPB took the lead for the first time (9-10), thanks to Onno Kuller. When Jari Krijgsman and captain Maurice Dentro brought the visitors to 10-12 in the next phase, the loot was in.

Waterpolo Den Haag won its first game of the season. PSV was the victim. In The Hague it was 12-10. Although Mark van Engelen’s team is still dangling at the bottom, there must be great relief that the zero has finally disappeared. It seemed for a while that The Hague, as often this season, would forfeit the win in the last period. PSV player Thijs Gevers put the visitors on 9-10. A revival of Fabian van Niekerk, Bart Turk and Jorik Amesz kept the points in-house.

There was less tension in Borculo and Rotterdam. In the regional derby between BZC and Het Ravijn, the big brother from Nijverdal won 11-24. After the second period, the home team had nothing more to say. In Rotterdam, UZSC defeated SVH 12-21.

Women

Saturday

Leader ZV De Zaan beat Het Ravijn 9-8. The visitors from Nijverdal never managed to take the lead, but it was exciting. Only in the fourth period Lieke Rogge made the margin somewhat comfortable (8-5), but because Lieke Schokker and Charlotte Mensink scored again after that, it was still a squeeze. With two and a half minutes left on the clock, Maxine Schaap brought some air again (9-7).

UZSC had no problem with the still winless PSV. In Utrecht it was 13-1. For a long time, Joachim de Ruijsscher’s team didn’t even seem to get any goals against, but after the thirteenth Utrecht goal by Sam Jutte, the Eindhoven visitors found the net for the honour, via Annelot van Rooijen.

ZVL-1886 remains in the top-4 after an 11-15 win over De Ham. Iefke van Belkum’s team saw a 5-7 lead evaporate in the third period. De Ham even took the lead (8-7) via Lisa van Trotsenburg, but ZVL-1886 could still breathe a sigh of relief thanks to five ZVL-goals in a row. Karen van Rijn made his debut and scored at ZVL-1886.

GZC Donk booked a great victory in Ede against Polar Bears (12-13). For a long time Polar Bears seemed to have no troubles; early in the second period, Polar Bears led 7-3. Then Ingrid Veenhuis’s team took control of the game. The visitors from Gouda scored five times in a row and kept the initiative after that. When Saskia Vos and Sabine Bergsma let GZC Donk run out to 10-13 in the fourth period, the difference was big enough to bring Polar Bears to their knees.

Sunday

Het Ravijn was ahead of PSV 13-10. After Saturday’s narrow 9-8 defeat against ZV De Zaan, this was a good boost for the team of Wicher Diallo, where Iris Vreeling’s debuted. In points, Het Ravijn is now equal with GZC Donk, who was beaten 11-5 by UZSC on Sunday. Against the Utrecht number 2, the team from Gouda was not involved. UZSC quickly built up a comfortable lead and did not let GZC Donk come any closer.

By ZVL-1886, 15-year old Tess van der Meer made his debut against Polar Bears. Due to injuries and private circumstances, a total of four girls who are also active in the youth league took part in the Leiden team. It resulted in an 18-7 loss. Polar Bears immediately took a 6-1 lead in the first period and Koen de Weerd’s team only expanded that lead.

ZV De Zaan, however, remains the unapproachable leader for the time being. Wouter Veer’s team also defeated De Ham. It became 11-8 with 15-year-old debutant Arnica Plugge.
