First wins for Posillipo and Roma; draw in Bologna

Five Italian teams played in the LEN cups this week, but the national championships continued with three encounters between the teams that are in the lower half of the table.

Posillipo and Roma recorded their first wins in the season. Newcomer De Akker and Anzio Waterpolis shared the points

Former European champion Posillipo collected the first three points in the season after a hard-fought win over Bogliasco. In the first three period, the lead was constantly changing the side. Just once, two goals separated the rivals. Posillipo earned a 2-goal lead with two quick goals at the beginning of the second period (4:2), but Bogliasco leveled before the middle break (5:5). The sides were tied at 8:8 before the final eight minutes. In the middle of the fourth period, Somma gave Posillipo a 9:8 lead. A minute and eight seconds before the final buzzer, Stevenson doubled the visitors’ advantage. After that, Bogliasco just reduced the gap.

De Akker, the newcomer to the Serie A1, earned a point against Anzio Waterpolis – 10:10. Anzio, the visiting team in this match, dictated the pace for three quarters and had a 8:6 advantage before the final period. After a quick exchange of goals at the start of the final period, Anzio led 9:7. De Akker leveled at 9:9 (28th minute), but Anzio regained a lead quickly after (10:9). Manzi scored an equalizer for 10:10 with eight seconds to go and the hosts earned their first point in the Serie A1.

Roma dominated the match against Catania. The team from the capital opened the match with a 4:0 lead. Catania was coming back from time to time, but it couldn’t catch up with the visitors.
