First wins for two returnees to Serie A1

Two returnees to Serie A1, Catania and Anzio Waterpolis, recorded wins in the most interesting games of Day 2 of the Italian Championships. Both teams collected their first points in this season.

Pro Recco blew Posillipo away. A great opening of the game put the European champions on the right track. Pro Recco had a 6:0 lead in the 9th minute and killed all suspense.

Anzio Waterpolis (former Latina Pallanuoto) returned to Serie A1 after 10 years. On Day 1 of the current championship, Anzio lost to Ortigia (9:17). Today, it won the first points after a narrow win over Quinto. Anzio won the first quarter (3:1), but Quinto produced a 4:0 series in the second period and earned a 5:3 lead. The hosts, led by 2011 World Champion Alex Giorgetti, equalized early in the third quarter (5:5). Niccolo Figari, who won two gold medals with Italy at the World Championships (2011 and 2019), gave the visitors a 6:5 advantage before the last break. Midway through the fourth period, Anzio built a two-goal advantage (9:7 and 10:8) and didn’t let Quinto level the score.

Catania earned the first points in the season by beating Salerno. The Sicilians secured a win with a 4:0 run in the fourth quarter. Before the final period, the teams were tied at 9:9. Early in the fourth period, Gluhaic gave Salerno a 10:9 lead. The hosts responded with four goals in a row and went to 13:10. After that, Salerno couldn’t come back.

Lazio kept up with Ortigia for three quarters, but it failed to make a surprise. Ortigia led 4:1 after the first quarter, but Lazio started coming back after the first break. In the third period, the hosts went in front (6:5 and 7:6). Just three seconds before the last break, Gallo converted a man-up for 7:7. Ortigia dominated in the fourth quarter and scored five unanswered goals to secure a comfortable 12:7 victory.

Trieste defeated Roma by three goals, but the game was open until the very end. Triste had a 3:2 advantage at halftime. Deep into the third period, Roma earned a 2-goal advantage (7:5). The hosts equalized with two goals in the last 110 seconds of this period, while Bini put Trieste in front after 59 seconds of play in the fourth period. After that, there were no goals for a while, the teams fought a hard battle. Trieste secured the points with goals from Buljubasic and M.Mezzarobba in the last two minutes of the game.

Earlier this week, reigning champion Brescia taught a lesson to Milano, while Savona beat Telimar in a flood of goals (17:12).
