Waspo 98 Hannover won the German Super Cup. The match for the trophy was played in Berlin today. The team from Hannover, which clinched the national cup last season, beat Spandau, the reigning champion, after a penalty shootout 21:20!

German Super Cup 2019

Spandau 04 – Waspo Hannover 20:21 (5:5, 4:4, 5:5, 2:2, PSO 4:5)

Spandau 04: Negrean 4, Strelezkij 3, Dedovic 3, Stamm 3, Restovic 2, Jungling 2, Chiru 1, Cuk 1, Pjesivac 1.

Waspo 98 Hannover: Nagaev 5, Radovic 5, Da. Brguljan 5, Schütze 2.Zech, Corusic, Real, Muslim.

The encounter between two archrivals offered a lot of twists and turns. At halftime, the score was 9:9. Hannover opened the second half excellently. The German cup winners scored three goals in less than two minutes and went 12:9 up. For the first time, the gap between the teams was larger than two goals.

Spandau managed to come back and it took a 14:13 lead 50 seconds from the end of the third period. However, Hannover equalized just 12 seconds before the last break – 14:14.

After 28 goals in the first three quarters, there were “only” 4 goals in the last period. Spandau was closer to a win, as it entered the last minute with a 16:15 advantage. Montenegrin Darko Brguljan converted a man-up 51 seconds from the end for 16:16 and a tense thriller was continued with a penalty shootout.

Hannover water polo players had stronger nerves and celebrated a 21:20 win after a long series of penalties. Montenegrins Aleksandar Radovic and Darko Brguljan, and Russian Ivan Nagaev, who arrived in Hannover a few months ago, were the leaders of the winning team. Each of them scored 5 goals. Romanian Tiberiu Negrean was the best scorer in Spandau 04 (4 goals).

There weren’t a lot of excitements in the Super Cup for ladies, held also in Berlin today, as Spandau 04 defeated Bayer 08 by nine goals 20:11 (5:1, 4:2, 5:6, 6:2)
