Germany’s defense halts Greece

The highlight of the third day of the water polo tournament at the University Games in Chengdu was an exciting European derby, with men’s teams of Germany and Greece facing off. The female competition started today.

Despite Greece leading 5:2 after the first quarter, Germany staged a remarkable comeback and displayed excellent defense in the second half of the match. By halftime, the Germans narrowed the gap to 6:7 and went on to demolish Greece with a 5:0 run in the third period. Greece failed to score a single goal in the second half, and Germany secured a 12:7 victory after adding one goal in the fourth quarter.

Fynn Schuetze, who will play for Sabadell in the next season, contributed to Germany’s victory with four goals. Zoran Bozic scored three, as well as Greece’s Konstantinos Mokkas.

Hungary defeated Japan with ease – 17:6 with five goals from Mate Aranyi.

Italy and Georgia extended their winning streaks in Group B. Italy sank South Korea 25:4. Nika Shushiashvili topped the scorers’ list in Georgia’s 14:3 victory over Slovakia.

China started well in the match against the USA and led 3:2 after the first eight minutes. At halftime, the sides were tied at 5:5. The Americans, led by Benjamin Larsen (4 goals), controlled the match in the second half to record a 12:8 victory.

Group A

Hungary – Japan 17:6 (5:1, 4:2 5:1, 3:2)

Germany – Greece 12:7 (2:5, 4:2, 5:0, 1:0)

Singapore bye

Standings:1. Hungary 9 points (3 games), 2. Germany 6 (3), 3. Greece 3 (2), 4. Japan 0 (2), 5. Singapore 0 (2).

Group B

USA – China 12:8 (2:3, 3:2, 3:2, 4:1)

South Korea – Italy 4:25 (2:7, 0:5, 2:7, 0:6)

Georgia – Slovakia 14:3 (3:1, 3:0, 4:2, 4:0)

Standings: 1. Italy 9, 2. Georgia 9, 3. USA 6, 4. Slovakia 3, 5. China 0, 6. South Korea 0.

2023 World University Games, women’s water polo tournament, Day 1

Six teams participate in the female tournament and are in one group. There were no surprises at the start. South Africa offered strong resistance to Australia, but the “Aussies” won three points with a 7:4 victory. Italy and China opened the tournament with convincing wins.

South Africa – Australia 4:7 (0:2, 1:1, 2:3, 1:1)

Italy – Japan 18:6 (4:1, 2:0, 7:1, 5:4)

China – Singapore 26:1 (8:0, 7:0, 7:1, 4:0)
