Great weekend for UZSC; two favorites fall in Utrecht

UZSC had a great weekend in the Dutch league.

The team from Utrecht recorded two important wins in two days, beating ZV De Zaan and Polar Bears, the teams that faced off in the final of the Cup of the Netherlands last week. After two surprises, UZSC came very close to 4th place.

Dutch Men’s League, Day 20

ZV De Zaan – De Ham 11:5 (2:1, 4:0, 1:3, 4:1)

Rescheduled match

UZSC – ZV De Zaan 12:11 (4:3, 2:1, 2:4, 4:3).

UZSC opened the weekend with a victory over Polar Bears in Utrecht. The hosts secured the win in the second half. After the first half, UZSC led 8:7. In the third and fourth periods, the hosts built a big advantage step-by-step and recorded a convincing 18:12 victory. Flemming Kastorp made the difference. The 21-year-old player netted six goals.

A day after beating Polar Belars, UZSC welcomed ZV De Zaan, which easily beat De Ham on Saturday (11:5). The visitors were the favorites, but UZSC was able to cause another surprise. The game was an even contest until the end. UZSC led 6:4 at halftime, but the teams entered the final period tied at 8:8. The neck-and-neck race continued after the last break. Still, the visitors from Zaandam returned home empty-handed, as George Athymaritsis scored a winner for UZSC with 14 seconds left on the clock for 13:12. Athymaritsis netted the last goal. But the man of the match was Flemming Kastrop again. He found the net six times for the second day in a row.

UZSC made two significant steps towards 4th place. After two victories over favorites, UZSC is two points behind 4th-placed AZC.

AZC won only a point in this round. It visited Nijverdal to face title-holder Het Ravijn. The hosts had a better spell in the first half and entered the third period with a 10:7 advantage. Still, at the middle break, the visitors from Alphen regrouped themselves and started coming back. AZC took a 16:15 lead at the finish, but Heitink saved the point for the hosts (16:16).

The leader of the Eredivisie, GZC Donk had ups and downs in an away match against ZPC Amersfoort, but it proved which team the favorite was. The team from Gouda beat the hosts by nine goals (19:10). After this weekend, GZC has 52 points, four more than 2nd-placed ZV De Zaan.
