Host Hungary and the only non-European team Japan recorded wins on Day 1 of the traditional BENU Cup in Budapest.
Hungary beat France (14:10), while Japan defeated the Netherlands narrowly 13:12.
The first game, between the Japanese and the Dutch, was an even contest from the beginning. However, the Netherlands managed to build a 2-goal lead n the third period (6:4, 7:5). They had 9:8 advantage. But, Japan regained a lead with two goals (10:9). Thirty seconds before the end of the third period, Winkelhorst leveled at 10:10. Japan took a 1-goal lead three times in the final period. The Dutch equalized on two occasions but had no response after Date’s goal for 13:12 in the 31st minute.
Hungary led for most of the time of the match against France. The hosts had an early 4:1 lead. France leveled at 5:5 n the 11th minute. Then Hungary took control and scored four straight goals to go to 9:5. The French halved the distance twice (9:11 and 10:12). Manhercz and Nagy found the net in the last three minutes and Hungary celebrated a 14:10 victory.
