Szolnok ran over Szentes in the first game of the quarterfinals played on Wednesday. The return game in Szentes will be a formality. Before that game, Szolnok will have a big challenge in the 2nd leg of the Champions League playoffs against OSC on Wednesday. Szolnok suffered a painful 6:15 loss yesterday.
Ferencvaros, which won the Cup last season, faced Eger in the quarterfinals. In the first match, the former European champion broke Eger with a 7:2 first half. The return match was played in Budapest. Eger kept up with the hosts until the middle break (8:8), while “Fradi”, led by Denes Varga, ruined all Eger’s hope in the third period (6:2).
Vasas played against Szeged. Since the beginning of the week, Vasas has been guided by a new coach – Csaba Matefalvy, former assistant coach. Matefalvy replaced Lajos Vad, who was dismissed after Vasas failed to qualify for the LEN Euro Cup quarterfinals. Matefalvy will guide the team until a new coach is appointed.
Vasas recorded two convincing wins. Still, these weren’t easy matches. In the first game, Szeged kept up with Vasas until 5:5. After that, Vasas scored six goals in a row and went to 11:5. The second match was similar to the 1st leg. The teams were in a neck-and-neck race during the first three quarters (8:8). Szeged ran out of gas for the final quarter, and Vasas achieved a 12:8 victory.
