Top four Hungarian teams start year with away wins

The celebration after winning the European gold still hasn’t been over in Hungary, but the European champions have no time to rest. The Hungarian League goes on. The 10th round was played this weekend.

Several players that competed at the 34th European Championships in Budapest missed the 10th round, but favorites made no mistake. The best four teams Ferencvaros, OSC, Eger and Szolnok recorded away wins.

Group A

Ferencvaros played without three European champions Denes Varga, Marton Vamos, and goalkeeper Soma Vogel. The three missed the match against Tatabanya because they deserved a rest longer than five days after winning the gold medal at the continental championships. Tatabanya kept up with the champions for almost two quarters. The hosts trailed 4:6 in the 15th minute. Then Ferencvaros scored four goals in a row for a comfortable 10:4 lead in the 18th minute.

As expected, Szolnok defeated UVSE in Budapest. The visitors secured the win in the fourth quarter. Szolnok (which played without the goalkeeper of the national team Viktor Nagy) had a 4:1 advantage after the first quarter, but UVSE started climbing back. In the 24th minute, the hosts earned a lead for the first time – 8:7. In the middle of the fourth period, the sides were tied at 11:11, but Szolnok scored three unanswered goals in the last three minutes for a 14:11 victory.

PVSK topped Debrecen 14:11 to climb into 4th place of the table, ahead of UVSE

OSC Budapest continued its winning streak with an 11:7 victory over AVUS in Szombathely. The visitors, playing without Montenegro’s captain Drasko Brguljan and Serbs Branislav Mitrovic and Andrija Prlainovic, didn’t have an easy task. AVUS scored the opening goal. Quickly after, OSC turned around the deficit to a 3:1 lead, and it was in front until the end. OSC built a 4-goal lead deep into the second period (6:2), but AVUS didn’t give up and fought hard. AVUS was just two goals behind the visitors (7:9), four minutes before the final buzzer. OSC’s players secured themselves calm finish of the match with two goals for a solid 11:7 win.

Szentes defeated Honved 10:7 and kept the chance to reach the group for the places 1st-8th. Szentes flew to a 7:3 lead by the middle break, and the first half of the match decided the outcome.

BVSC beat Vasas in the Budapest derby 12:10 and caught Honved in points.

Eger demolished Kaposvari 16:8.
