Ortigia wins in derby in Busto Arsizio

The best Italian teams Pro Recco and Brescia beat their respective rivals with ease in the second round of the national championships, but all other matches were big battles.

Ortigia defeated Sport Management in the derby of the round, which was played in Sport Management’s pool in Busto Arsizio.

The first half of the encounter between Sport Management and Ortigia in Busto Arsizio was pretty balanced. After the second quarter, the score was 5:5. Early in the third period, Sport Management took a 6:5 lead, but the visitors from Sicily answered with three consecutive goals and earned an 8:6 advantage 31 seconds before the last break. In the last second of this period, Mirarchi (Sport Management) found the net for 7:8 to return the hosts into the game. However, Ortigia opened the last period with a 3:0 series and jumped to a 10:6 lead, which proved vital in their win (11:8).

After a hard-fought battle, Posillipo and Florentia shared the points at the „Felice Scandone“ pool in Naples. At halftime, the sides were tied (5:5), while home team Posillipo entered the last period with an 8:6 advantage. After just a minute and a half of play in the last period, Florentia equalised (8:8). Mattiello put Posillipo ahead (9:8), but Razzi scored two goals in a span of 59 seconds and Florentia earned a 10:9 advantage with two minutes remaining on the clock. Just 29 seconds before the end, Posillipo’s Mattiello scored his 4th goal to secure a 10:10 draw.

The match Iren- Roma, played in Genoa, also ended with no winner. The score was 5:5 before the last eight minutes, while the visiting team from Rome earned a 7:5 lead in the third minute of the fourth quarter. Then, Iren’s bombardier Tabbiani netted three goals in a row to put the hosts in front (8:7). Maltese Steve Camilleri (Roma) beat the buzzer, as he hit the back of the net 7 seconds from the end and the rivals shared the points (8:8).

Savona water polo players overcame Telimar in a thrilling finish, despite they controlled the match for most of the time. Savona, led by Valerio Rizzo (6 goals), was 6:3 up after the first quarter and it had 11:7 advantage in the middle of the third period, but Telimar started climbing back. By the end of the third, the visitors cut the deficit to 1 (10:11). Savona entered the last 60 seconds with a 14:12 advantage. Telimar’s Dragan Draskovic found the net for 13:14 with 53 seconds to go. After that, Savona managed to keep the minimal advantage.

Brescia demolished Canottieri Naples (14:3), while Pro Recco had no problems in the match against Trieste (19:8), which was played on Thursday.

Salerno defeated Lazio in Rome. The visitors earned a crucial advantage in the third period (12:9) and maintained the distance until the end (14:11).
