Ortigia downs Sport Management and keeps 3rd place

The 15th round of the Italian Championship is scheduled for Saturday, but three games were played today because three Italian teams – Pro Recco, Brescia and Ortigia – will battle at the European stage next weekend.

The derby was played in Syracuse, where Ortigia defeated Sport Management 9:6. Pro Recco ran over Trieste 16:6. Brescia beat Canottieri Naples 10:7.

Ortigia – Sport Management 9:6 (1:0, 4:2, 1:2, 3:2)

Ortigia defeated Sport Management and kept the 3rd place in the table The Sicilians also increased their advantage ahead of 4th-placed Sport Management. After today’s encounter, Sport Management has five points fewer than Ortigia.

The hosts dictated the pace from the beginning of the game. Ortigia earned a 5:1 advantage in the 14th minute. Sport Management reduced the gap to two before the last break (4:6), but the home team opened the fourth quarter with two goals for 8:4 advantage and controlled the game until the final buzzer.

Pro Recco was too strong for Trieste. In the middle of the second period, the reigning champion led 6:1.Trieste scored two goals before the end of the first half and trailed by three goals at halftime (3:6). After the middle break, the visitors dominated and recorded a big 16:6 win.

Last-placed Canottieri fought hard and kept up with Brescia for a while. Still, the Naples-based side wasn’t able to surprise the favorite. Brescia had a 2:0 advantage after the first eight minutes. Canottieri managed to equalize twice in the second quarter (2:2, 3:3). After that, Brescia scored three goals in a row and went 6:3 ahead early in the third period. In the remaining time, Brescia didn’t let Canottieri equalize again.

On Friday, Pro Recco will host OSC Budapest in the Champions League. Ortigia and Brescia will play their matches of the 1st leg of the LEN Euro Cup semifinals. Brescia is going to face Eger on home soil. Ortigia will play against Oradea in Romania.
