Karl Izzo, who has been Malta’s men’s water polo head coach for nine years, has been elected as the new president of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA).

Izzo was the only candidate. Before the  Assembly, Joe Caruana Curran, who was the president for the past 12 years, withdrew his candidacy. Izzo was elected for a three-year term.

Behind Izzo is a long and successful coaching career. Under Izzo’s guidance, the Maltese national team qualified for the European Championships four times in a row. This year, Malta finished in 14th place at the Europeans in Split. In the past several years , water polo has been becoming more and more popular in Malta.

After the elections, Izzo told the delegates he was delighted to be elected as the ASA president.

“It is of great privilege for me to have been chosen to serve as president of one of the biggest associations in Malta. This is the governing body of prestige and success, and that has an exciting future awaiting it.

“I would like to acknowledge former president Joe Caruana Curran who has been an instrumental figure in the success attained by our association in the last few years. The doors of the association will always remain open for him. I also would like to thank Rita Azzopardi and Anthony ‘Panelli’ Farrugia and the ASA Executive Committee, who were also an integral part of this success.”

In the past weeks, Izzo presented his programme, which is based on several pillars – Strategic Plan, Financial Stability, Education programmes & best practices, Attractive competitions,

“As I said in the past weeks, my biggest priority is that we introduce more professionalism, financial stability and transparency in how we lead this organisation, bringing in more valid people to its fold.” (quote source:Sportdesk, Malta).
