Last gasp goals decide dramas in Budapest derbies

Two thrilling Budapest derbies have been the highlights of a very interesting Round 9 of the Hungarian League.

Ferencvaros edged out BVSC – 7:6. Denes Varga scored a winner for “Fradi” in dying seconds.

OSC and Vasas shared the points (11:11) in a match with a lot of twists and turns. OSC, the home team in this match, saved a point with a last-gasp goal. OSC and Vasas remained unbeaten, but Ferencvaros is the only team with a perfect record in the season after this tie.

Ferencvaros hosted BVSC in the first match of the round. The visitors scored an opening goal in their first possession. Ferencvaros responded quickly with two for 2:1. From that point on, the game was a “tit for tat” battle. Ferencvaros earned a one-goal lead five times, but BVSC equalized each time. Just 23 seconds from the end, BVSC’s Marton Nagy found the net for 6:6. Ferencvaros earned a man-up at 0:16. 2019 Total Player Denes Varga beat the buzzer. He converted a man-up with two seconds to go to give Ferencvaros a 7:6 victory.

OSC stunned Vasas in the opening minutes. The runner-up in the 2021 Hungarian League jumped to a 6:2 lead early in the second period. But, Vasas was able to cut the deficit before the middle break (5:6), while Sedlmayer opened the third period with a power-play goal and leveled at 6:6.

In the 19th minute, OSC lost left without Krisztof Varnai, who was excluded for brutality foul, and the hosts played with a man fewer in the field in the following four minutes.Batori converted a penalty after that exclusion and put Vasas in front – 7:6. During the four minutes in which Vasas constantly had a man-up, the visitors scored two more goals and went to 9:6. After seven consecutive goals by Vasas, Dala Dome ended OSC’s goalless phase that lasted 15 minutes. Just 58 seconds before the end of the 3rd period, he sent the ball into the net for 7:9.

After the last break, Vasas continued its series of goals and it had an 11:7 advantage with 03:42 minutes left on the clock. However, the drama wasn’t over yet. Vasas didn’t score in the last three and a half minutes, while OSC found the net four times. Krisztian Manhercz scored an equalizer in the last second of the match for the final score – 11:11.

Kaposvar earned a valuable win over Eger (10:8).

Honved defeated DVSE in Debrecen. The visitors dictated the pace for most of the time and had an 11:8 advantage (25th minute). But, Debrecen cut the deficit to one goal two times in the fourth quarter – 10:11 (28th minute) and 11:12 (29th minute). But, none of the teams could score in the last 3:40 minutes and Honved collected all three points.

The reigning champion Szolnok cruised to a victory over PVSK.
