Montenegro and Greece play for gold at “Samartzidis Cup”

Greece and Montenegro will battle for 1st place at the 2022 “Samartzidis Cup” in Heraklion in Crete.

After two rounds, each team has two victories. Tomorrow evening, Greece and Montenegro will face off in a decisive encounter for 1st place.

On Day 2, Montenegro beat Germany convincingly (15:7) and Greece earned a hard-fought win over the Netherlands (16:13).

After a 12-goal first quarter of the encounter between Montenegro and Germany, the Montenegrins led 8:4. By the middle break, they stretched the margin to seven (12:5). Both teams slowed in the second half. At the last break, the score was15:7. Nobody found the net in the final eight minutes.

Host Greece needed a lot of time to break a well-prepared Dutch squad. Greece led 5:3 after the first quarter and maintained the difference until 8:6. Then, the Netherlands started coming back. The Dutch leveled at 8:8, 9:9, 10:10. In the dying seconds of the third period, the visitors gained an 11:10 advantage after a goal from a counterattack. The Netherlands had a 12:11 and 13:12 advantage in the fourth period, but Greece scored four unanswered goals (Genidounias 2, Argyropoulos and Papanastasiou) in the final three minutes for a 16:13 victory. Konstantinos Genidounias was the man of the match with seven goals.
