Olympiacos and Vouliagmeni earn big wins in derby games

The Champions League clubs, Olympiacos and Vouliagmeni, killed all excitement in the derby matches of the 21st round of the Greek League.

Olympiacos defeated the LEN Challenger Cup semifinalist Apollon in a 31-goal game (19:12). Vouliagmeni’s defense was almost perfect in this round. Vouliagmeni let Panionios score only six goals and recorded a 16:6 victory.

Group G1 (1st – 8th place)

Olympiacos earned a 1:0 lead after 32 seconds of play after Genidounias converted a man-up. From that point on, the visitors were always in front while Apollon chased the champion, but it couldn’t equalize. Olympiacos had a 2:0 and 4:1 advantage in the first quarter. At the first break, the score was 2:4. Two goals separated the teams until 5:7. At the finish of the second and at the beginning of the third period, Olympiacos earned a significant advantage. The visitors netted two goals in the last 90 seconds of the first half (Vamos and Papanastasiou). Gouvis opened the second half with an action goal for 10:5 and Apollon’s resistance was broken. Olympiacos had a nine-goal lead in the final quarter (17:8, 18:9, 19:10). Still, the hosts narrowed the gap at the finish of the quarter.

Olympiacos played without Filip Filipovic, who is injured. Likely, former Serbia’s captain won’t travel to Barcelona where Olympiacos will face Barceloneta in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Vouliagmeni will also play an important Champions League match on Wednesday (against Jadran in Split), demolished 4th-placed Panionios. The LEN Euro Cup semifinalists couldn’t keep up with Vouliagmeni for a long. Vouliagmeni had a 4-goal advantage at the first break (5:1). At halftime, it stood 9:3. By the end, Vouliagmeni streched the margin to ten (16:6).

PAOK defeated Panathinaikos more convincingly than expected. PAOK dominated throughout the match and recorded a 16:8 win. PAOK is now just three points behind Panionios.

Peristeri was better than the last-placed Ethnikos.

Glyfada defeated Ydraikos and kept 9th place, but AEK is still two points behind the leader as it earned an away win over Chania.
