Budapest water polo fans had an opportunity to enjoy two big derbies in the famous “Komjadi pool” today.

Those were encounters between the clubs ranked from 1st to 4th place in the Hungarian League. The Champions League teams collected points in both games.

OSC beat Vasas 9:7 and returned to 2nd place, pushing Vasas to 3rd position.

Less than an hour after the end of that game, the duel between the league-leader Ferencvaros and 4th-placed Szolnok started. These two teams are the last two Hungarian champions (Ferencvaros in 2022, and Szolnok in 2021). Still, this season, Ferencvaros is a considerably stronger team than Szolnok. Ferencvaros recorded a convincing 9:4 victory, but the favorite needed a lot of time to break Szolnok’s resistance.

The first derby played in the Komjadi pool this evening, the match Vasas – OSC, was a duel of the teams of similar qualities. The sides were neck-and-neck throughout the match. Two goals separated the rivals only at the end of the game. OSC had stronger nerves, played better in the final minutes, and earned three points. There were plenty of twists and turns in the match. After a balanced first quarter, OSC took a one-goal lead twice in the second period (3:2 and 4:2), but Vasas earned a slim lead before the big break (5:4).

The man of the match, Krisztian Manhercz (4 goals), led OSC’s attack excellently in the third period. In the 18th minute, he scored from a penalty shot to level at 5:5. In the middle of the quarter, Sava Randjelovic put Vasas in front by converting a man-up (6:5). But, then came Krisztian Manhercz again. He netted the last two goals in the third quarter and OSC entered the final eight minutes leading 7:6.

Early in the fourth period, Akos Konarik equalized (7:7). Still, Vasas couldn’t find the net in the last six and a half minutes. Two minutes before the end, Daniel Angyal scored OSC’s eighth goal. Vasas missed two chances to level the score in its last attack. First, Csacsovszky blocked a power-play shot from Sedlmayer. After that, Vasas gained a new possession. Still, there was no goal. OSC’s goalie Marton Levai saved a shot from Ivan Nagaev. OSC earned a man-up with 16 seconds to go and it was the end of the big battle. Gergely Burian closed the match, scoring at 0:04 for the final score – 9:7.

The winner in the second derby, in the match Ferencvaros – Szolnok, was decided before the final quarter.  The Budapest-based side proved who the favorite was, but Szolnok didn’t surrender easily. The visitors kept up with the favorites for a long. Both defenses did their job well in the first half. Two minutes before the middle break, the score was 2:2. At the finish of the second quarter, Ferencvaros netted two quick goals to build a 4:2 lead.

Stylianos Argyropoulos opened the second half with a power-play goal to make it 5:2. Schmolcz replied immediately (3:5). However, Ferencvaros produced a new 3:0 run. The reigning champions went to 8:3 (23rd minute) and there was no way back for Szolnok. Denes Varga, Szilard Jansik, Nemanja Ubovic didn’t get on the scoreboard this evening, but younger players contributed to Ferencvaros’ win with their goals.

Eger demolished PVSK Pecs (14:6) and caught up with Szolnok in points.

Honved defeated Miskolc convincingly. But, the encounter in Miskolc was two games in one. Until the middle of the third period, it was an even contest. In the 21st minute, the score was 4:4. After that, a ‘second game” started. Honved netted eight unanswered goals in the last 12 minutes and celebrated a 12:4 win.

Honved is in 6th place and it is just a point behind Eger and Szolnok. It has three points fewer than 3rd-placed Vasas. The battle for the playoffs has been becoming more and more interesting as the end of the first half of the regular season has been approaching.

BVSC beat UVSE (16:4) and remains in 7th place, with two points fewer than Honved.

Kaposvar beat KSI (10:7). An opening 4:0 series in the first ten minutes put Kaposvar on the right track.
