Panionios and PAOK take points in big thrillers

The best Greeks clubs, Olympiacos and Vouliagmeni, didn’t have demanding tasks in the 20th round of the national championships. The other two games of the playoffs group produced a lot of excitement.

Panionios edged out Apollon in the derby (7:6). PAOK narrowly defeated Ethnikos 11:10 after a great comeback.

2022/23 Greek League, Day 20 (Day 6 of 2nd phase)

Group G1 (1st – 8th place)

Panionios – Apollon Smyrnis 7:6 (3:3, 0:0, 1:1, 3:2)

With the win in the derby, Panionios water polo players reduced the gap between them and Apollon to only two points. Besides, they gained new self-confidence before the match against Vasas in the LEN Euro Cup semifinals. Apollon started very well and took an opening 2:0. Shortly after, Panionios began to take control and produced a 3:0 run. The hosts led 3:2, 5:4 but Apollon leveled on each occasion. Three minutes before the end, Papakos gave Panionios a 6:5 advantage and after that, the visitors had no response. Gounas decided everything scoring for 7:5 with 33 seconds left on the clock. Nikola Bogdanovic set the final score ten seconds later.

Ethnikos dictated the pace for most of the match against PAOK. Therefore many fans believed that the Piraeus-based side would record a win. Ethnikos led 4:1 in the second quarter and had a 6:3 advantage in the third period. With five and a half minutes remaining, Ethnikos still had a 3-goal advantage (8:5). However, PAOK produced a great comeback. The visitors scored four unanswered goals and secured a 9:8 victory. Jesse Koopman scored a winner with 42 seconds to go.

Olympiacos and Vouliagmeni easily beat Peristeri and Panathinaikos, respectively. Both teams had ups and downs in these matches because they had already started thinking about the Greek derby in the Champions League. On Wednesday, Vouliagmeni will welcome Olympiacos in a game of Day 9 of the Champions League.

Ydraikos and Chania shared the points in the most exciting match of the day, and Glyfada made the most of it. Glyfada defeateed Chios (8:7) and returned to the top of the table.
