Pro Recco sinks Brescia; Barceloneta also merciless; Ferencvaros beats Vasas

Pro Recco extended its winning streak in all competitions with another emphatic victory.

In the much-awaited “Italian classic” match, the European and Italian champions outclassed Brescia, registering a resounding 12:4 win.

Meanwhile, the big derby between Vasas and Ferencvaros took place in Budapest tonight. Ferencvaros recorded a 14:10 victory

Barceloneta secured a huge 13:4 win over Barcelona in the Spanish League.

Jadran Herceg Novi emerged victorious over Jadran Herceg Novi, defeating them 15:13 in a penalty shootout in the last round of the first phase of the Regional League.

The first phase ended in Serbia, too.

Italy, Day 9

Pro Recco demolished Brescia and widened the gap between the two teams to nine points. Brescia took a 1:0 lead after just 35 seconds of play. But, after that, Pro Recco’s defense did a great job. Tomasso Negri was in front of the champions’ goal for the entire match, and Marco Del Lungo was on the bench. Recco produced a 6:0 run by the middle break. It entered the final quarter leading 9:2. Brescia had ten man-up attacks in the first three quarters and didn’t convert a single. Young Matteo Iocchi Gratta was the best scorer in a 12:4 victory with four goals, Aaron Younger scored three, etc.

Second-placed Savona follows Recco, and it is still three points behind. Savona convincingly defeated Quinto 15:7. Posillipo and Ortigia shared the points, which is a better score for Posillipo. The Naples-based team started excellently. It led 5:1 at the first break. Early in the fourth period, Ortigia leveled for the first time – 9:9. Two and a half minutes before the end, Francesco Cassia gave Ortigia a 10:9 lead. Posillipo saved a point, thanks to Mattiello, who scored an equalizer -10:10, by converting a man-up with 35 seconds to go.

Telimar earned an away victory in Trieste (15:12). The Sicilians led 8:5 at halftime and maintained the difference in the following two quarters.

Trieste – Telimar 12:15 (3:5, 2:3, 4:4, 3:3)
Roma Vis Nova – De Akker 9:13 ( 3:1, 4:3, 1:6, 1:3)

Hungary, Day 12

Vasas played well, but it couldn’t stop Ferencvaros, which kept a perfect record with a 14:10 victory in the derby. Vasas led once at the beginning of the game and leveled at 3:3 late into the first quarter. In the middle of the second quarter, Vasas earned a 3-goal advantage for the first time (7:4). Dusan Mandic, the best scorer of the game (5 goals), made it 10:6 in the 20th minute. Ferencvaros held back all Vasas’ comeback attempts and didn’t let the hosts come close.

As for the matches played on Saturday, the winner of the day was Kaposvar, which recorded an away 10:8 victory over Szolnok. Kaposvar was in front for most of the time. It built a 3-goal lead midway through the fourth quarter (9:6). The hosts reduced the gap, but couldn’t equalize.

 Spain, Day 10

After beating Tourcoing and securing the top spot in its group of the LEN Euro Cup, Barcelona didn’t save enough energy for a demanding derby against Barceloneta. The Spanish champion ruled the field. The defense, with goalkeeper Unai Aguirre was almost perfect. Barceloneta led 3:0 at the first break and 8:1 early in the third period. At the end of the game, nine goals separated the rivals. Barcelona posted a 13:4 win with three goals from Bernat Sanahuja.

Terrassa convincingly beat Mediterrani in the other derby of the day – 9:5 and kept 2nd place.

Sabadell – Sant Andreu 17:7 (3:2, 5:3, 8:1, 1:1)
Sant Feliu – Tenerife 9:10 (2:1, 2:2, 2:2, 3:5)
Real Canoe – Rubi 12:9 (2:3, 3:2, 3:1, 4:3)
Terrassa – Mediterrani 9:5 (2:2, 2:1, 3:0, 2:2)
Catalunya – Mataro 6:12 (1:5, 3:2, 0:3, 2:2)

Regional League, Group A, Round 10

In the last round in Group A of the Regional League (subgroup 1st – 3rd place), two Jadrans met for the fourth time this season. Jadran Split beat Jadran Herceg Novi three times (twice in the Champions League and once in the Regional League). The Montenegrin champion finally celebrated the first win.

The game played in Trebinje was as exciting as the previous three. Jadran HN beat its namesake after a penalty shootout – 15:13.. The Montenegrins led by three goals in the second quarter (7:4 and 8:5). Jadran Split leveled at 10:10 before the last break. Kholod opened the fourth period with a power-play goal to give Jadran HN an 11:10 advantage. Loren Fatovic leveled at 11:11 from a counterattack with 01:35 minutes to go. The match entered the shootout. The Montenegrin team had stronger nerves and took two points. But, one point was enough for Jadran Split to keep the top spot.

Loren Fatovic (Jadran Split) was the best scorer, scoring six goals. Jovan Vujovic netted three for jadran HN.

Two Jadrans and Jug qualified for the final phase of the Regional League. They will be joined by the top two teams in the regular season in the Serbian League.

Two tournaments will be played in the final phase. Jadran Split and the first-placed team in the Serbian League will be the hosts.

There were no matches in the subgroup for 4th – 7th place this weekend.

Subgroup 1st – 3rd place

Jadran HN – Jadran S  15:13 (3:2, 5:4, 2:4, 1:1, PSO 4:2)

Final standings: 1. Jadran S 8*, 2. Jug 8*, 3. Jadran HN 2

*Points in head-to-head encounters: Jadran S 4, Jug 2

Serbian League, Day 8

The last round of the Serbian League in 2023 produced a lot of goals.

Even 69 goals were scored in two matches in the Group for places 1st – 6th. The reigning champion Novi Beograd started slowly against Partizan, but it recorded a comfortable 18:13 victory, with four goals from Dimitrios Skoumpakis. Angelos Vlachopoulos, Skoumpakis’ countryman, and Marko Radulovic added three each.

Crvena Zvezda beat NBG Vukovi with an 8-goal margin (23:15). Gajic and Gogov scored four for the winning team.

The league will continue after the World Championships in Doha, with six rounds. The teams that were in Group A in the first phase (Novi Beograd, Partizan, Sabac) will play against the teams that started the season in Group B (Radnicki, Crvena Zvezda, NBG Vukovi).

The same system will be applied in the Group for 7th – 12th place.

Group 1st – 6th place

Partizan – Novi Beograd 13:18 (4:3, 0:4, 4:4, 5:7)
NBG Vukovi – Crvena zvezda 15:23 (4:5, 1:5, 6:6, 4:7)
Radnicki and Sabac bye

Standings: 1. Novi Beograd 12, 2. Crvena Zvezda 11, 3. Radnicki 7, 4. Sabac 5, 5. Partizan 1, 6. NBG Vukovi 0.

Group 7th – 12th place

Proleter – Stari Grad 11:7 (2:1, 2:1, 2:3, 5:2)
Valis – Tas 22:10 (7:2, 6:3, 5:2, 4:3)
Vojvodina and Nais bye

Standings: 7. Valis 12, 8. Proleter 10, 9. Vojvodina 6, 10. Nais 5, 11. Stari Grad 2, 12. Tas 1.
