South American Championships: Brazilians make no mistake

March 25, 2021

The South American championships in aquatic sports have started in Buenos Aires.

Seven male and seven female teams take part in the water polo tournaments. The five rounds in both tournaments have been played so far. After the group stage, the top four teams from each tournament will advance to the semifinals.

Most of the favorites recorded convincing wins, but there were a few interesting encounters in the first five rounds.

The highlight of the first five rounds of the female tournament was a derby Brazil – Argentina. The Brazilians recorded a 12:8 victory. But, after a loss to Brazil, the hosts posted three wins in a row. Argentina downed Paraguay (32:0), Chile (22:1), and Colombia (13:9). The win over Colombia might be crucial in a battle for second place. After five rounds, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru have six points each (three wins), but the home side is the best in this circle. Besides, the Colombians and the Peruvians still haven’t played against Brazil, the only team which has a perfect record to date.

Two teams have been unbeaten at the male tournament. Brazil heads had an impressive goal difference (+120). Argentina also has done a great job so far and achieved a little bit worse goal difference than Brazil (+112). After the 5th round, Argentina heads the group, but Brazil has played one match less than the Argentinians.

Brazil and Argentina will face off in the last round of the group stage, and that game will probably decide the group winner.

2 Brazil 4 – 8
3 Colombia 4 – 4
4 Peru 4 – 3
5 Uruguay 5 – 3
6 Chile 4 – 2
