Surprise in Crete; Olympiacos and Vouliagmeni – 10/10

The leaders and the 2nd-placed teams in the groups of the Greek Men’s League recorded convincing wins on Day 10. Olympiacos and Vouliagmeni continued their winning streaks.

However, there were exciting battles and some unexpected results in other matches. Chania produced the biggest surprise of the season, beating Peristeri.

The top two sides, Olympiacos and Panionios, were too strong for Ydraikos and Nireas Chalandruou, respectively. Veterans led the winning sides. Alexandros Gounas found the net seven times in Apollon’s 25:9 victory over Nireas Chalandriou. Olympiacos beat Ydraikos 17:5 with three goals from Filip Filipovic. Filipovic and Buslje were Olympiacos’ foreigners in this game.

The other two games in this group offered more excitement. Third-placed Panathinaikos edged out Chios. The Green-Whites started excellently. Panathinaikos led 4:0 and 6:1. But the game changed the course after the middle break. Chios started coming back. Panathinaikos still had a solid advantage before the fourth period (9:4). Chios didn’t stop. The hosts scored four unanswered goals in the last eight minutes, but they didn’t equalize.

AEK and Ethnikos, the teams that battle for 4th place, faced off in AEK’s pool. The home side got off to a flying start. After a 5:2 first quarter, AEK added three unanswered goals in the second period for a huge 8:2 lead. Ethnikos played better in the second half, but AEK, unlike Panathinaikos, didn’t let its rival come close. After this game, three points separate AEK and Ethnikos.

Vouliagmeni firmly holds first place in Group B. In a pause between the 9th and 10th rounds, Vouliagmeni played a postponed derby against Apollon and recorded a 13:9 victory. In the 10th round, the Champions League club didn’t have a demanding task as it faced the bottom-placed Ilysiakos. The team coached by Vladimir Vujasinovic recorded a 16:8 win after having a 14:3 lead in the third period.

Apollon Smyrnis defeated Palaio Faliro. But, Apollon needed a lot of time to take control. Palaio stunned the favorite in the opening minutes and led 3:1 and 6:3 in the first half. At the middle break, Palaio Faliro had an 8:6 advantage, and stretched the margin to three (9:6) early in the third. Still, Palaio’s dream of a surprise didn’t come true. Apollon tightened its defense and produced a 10:1 run in the remaining time. Emmanouil Solanakis contributed to Apollon’s 16:10 victory with five goals.

A surprise didn’t happen in Apollon’s pool, but an encounter on the island of Crete produced an unexpected outcome. Chania, which had only three points after nine rounds, beat 3rd-placed Peristeri 6:5. Chania took a 2:0 lead in the first quarter and maintained a 2-goal difference until the last break (6:4). Favorite Peristeri scored a consolation goal in the final period, but didn’t equalize.

PAOK made the most of the result in Chania, and caught up with Peristeri in points. PAOK played against Glyfada. It was a close contest. PAOK led 5:3 at halftime. Glyfada leveled at 5:5 before the last eight minutes. But PAOK ruled the field in the fourth quarter.
