Szolnok advances to Top 8 group of Hungarian Cup

The second stage of the Hungarian Cup has begun today. On day 1 only the matches in the White Group were played.

After the first two rounds of the tournament in Szentes, Szolnok secured the 1st place in the White group and continues the battle for the trophy.

The first two teams from each of the four groups of the second stage will play in the group for the places 1st -8th of the third phase next week.

2020/21 Hungarian Cup, second stage, Day 1

White group (Szentes)

Szolnok-Szentes 17:5 (4:1, 4:1, 5:2, 4:1)

Szolnok found it easy to beat the home team Szentes in the match that opened the tournament – 17:5. The encounter between Eger and KSI produced 34 goals. Eger controlled the match and recorded a big win 22:12. Benedek Baksa, who netted 7 goals, was the man of the match.

The evening session offered two action-packed games.

Szentes collected the three points with an 11:8 win over KSI.

A rejuvenated team of Eger fought hard in the last match of the day. Szolnok proved who the favorite was, but it didn’t have an easy task. Eger had a 3:1 advantage after the first quarter. Szolnok dominated the second period, and by the halftime, earned a 5:3 lead. However, Eger was able to come back, and equalized in the middle of the third period – 6:6. However, Szolnok scored three unanswered goals before the last break and entered the last period with a solid 9:6 advantage. The former European champion, led by Filip Filipovic and Akos Konarik, doubled an advantage in the last eight minutes.

Tomorrow, Szolnok will face KSI; while Szentes and Eger will battle for the 2nd place in the group.

Standings: 1. Szolnok 15, 2. Szentes 9, 3. Eger 6, 4. KSI 0.

Blue group (Tatabanya)

The games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.

Standings: OSC 9, BVSC 4, PVSK 4, Tatabanya 0.

Red group (Budapest)

The games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.

Standings: Ferencvaros 9, Honved 6, UVSE 3, Debrecen 0.

Green group (Szeged)

The games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.

Standings: Vasas 9, Miskolc 4, Szeged 3, Kaposvar 1.
(the points won in the first stage were carried to the second phase)

Third stage (August 8 – 9)

Group I (1st-8th place): Blue1, Blue2, White1, White2, Red1, Red2, Green1, Green2
The 1st-placed teams from the 2nd stage will face the 2nd-placed sides. The teams which were in the same group of the Stage 2 will not meet, but they will carry the score of their encounter in the 2nd stage.

Group II (9th – 16th place): Blue3, Blue4, White3, White4, Red3, Red4, Green3, Green4
The 3rd-placed teams from the 2nd stage will face the 4th-placed sides. The teams which were in the same group of the Stage 2 will not meet, but they will bring the score of their encounter in the 2nd stage.

Fourth stage (August 12 – 13)

The Cup will be finished in Budapest in the middle of August. The fourth stage is a knock-out round.

August 12

Semifinals 1st -4th place: I.1 – I.4 and I.2 – I.3.
Semifinals 5th – 8th place: I.5 – I.8 and I.6 – I.7.
Semifinals 9th – 12th place: II.1 – II.4 and II. 3 – II.4
Semifinals 13th – 16th place: II.5 – II.8 and II.6 – II.7
