Szolnok downs Miskolc to continue unbeaten run

After the 5th round of the Hungarian championship, there are only four clubs in a circle of the unbeaten teams.

Miskolc, after a series of wins in the Hungarian league and in the Euro Cup, suffered the 1st loss this season. Miskolc hosted Szolnok in the 5th round. Szolnok celebrated a 13:11 win and continued its winning streak, as well as Ferencvaros , Eger and OSC.

The derby Miskolc – Szolnok didn’t disappoint water polo lovers. The match was a hard battle between two strong teams. Miskolc controlled the match for almost two quarters. The hosts had a 5:3 lead deep into the third period. Then Szolnok produced a 5:0 run and turned around a deficit to an 8:5 lead. The visitors maintained a 3-goal advantage until the end of the third quarter (9:6). Miskolc opened the final quarter with two goals and cut the deficit to 1 (8:9). Szolnok replied with two goals in a span of 33 seconds and went 11:8 up in the middle of the last quarter. Miskolc couldn’t catch the rival anymore and Szolnok won points with a 13:11 win.

European champion Ferencvaros cruised to a 20:9 victory over Debrecen.

PVSK Pecs defeated Szeged by a goal (7:6). The team from Pecs built a 7:4 advantage in the 27th minute of the encounter. Szeged netted two goals in the remaining time, but it didn’t manage to equalise.

As expected, UVSE defeated Tatabanya (11:9).

OSC and Eger were too strong for their respective rivals in the 5th round of the national championship, but other two matches in this group offered more excitements.

Vasas edged out Szentes 8:7. Vasas had an excellent opening of the match as it earned an early 4:1 lead. But, then came Szentes’s 5:1 series and the visitors gained a 6:5 lead early in the third period. However, Vasas gained a new advantage before the last break – 7:6. Szentes levelled the score in the middle of the last period (7:7), but Vasas collected the three points thanks to Rolf Bencz, who converted a penalty shot for an 8:7 victory with 02.59 remaining on the clock.

Kaposvar defeated AVUS in a flood of goals – 13:12. Kaposvar led throughout the match and it had a 5-goal advantage (10:5). AVUS was able to come back and it reduced the gap to 1 (10:11) in the middle of the last quarter. Quickly after that, Kaposvar earned a 3-goal lead (13:10). AVUS netted two consolation goals in the last two minutes. Kaposvar kept the three points.
