Trieste avoids surprise and narrowly defeats Roma

Favorites collected points in the 3rd round of the Italian Men’s League. However, some of the teams from the higher half of the table had very demanding tasks.

The most interesting game of the day was an encounter between Trieste and Roma. Trieste, the eighth finalist of the LEN Euro Cup, had 12 available players for almost the entire match against Roma. Still, the favorite recorded a narrow 7:6 victory thanks to a late goal.

Ortigia, Pro Recco, and Savona kept their perfect records.

Bogliasco – Brescia postponed

Trieste was a heavy favorite against Roma, but it secured three points with a late goal. Trieste left without its best scorer Yusuke Inaba already in the 3rd minute. The Japanese was excluded for a brutality foul. Roma built a 2:0 lead in the four minutes playing with a man-up. Twelve seconds before the first break, Trieste got on the scoreboard – 1:2. The visitors entered the second half with a 5:4 advantage. After a goalless third period, Roma scored the first two goals in the fourth quarter and retook a lead (6:5). Vrlic leveled at 6:6. Trieste had stronger nerves in a thrilling finish. Mladossich netted for 7:6 with 59 seconds to go. The visitors kept the minimal advantage and three points.

The Americans Johnny Hooper and Max Irving were, along with Mario Del Basso, Telimar’s power engines in a 13:7 victory over Posillipo. The Palermo-based side, which suffered an 8-goal loss to Ortigia in the Sicilian derby three days ago (8:16), found its rhythm in the early stage of the game. The visitors opened the game with a 5:0 lead. The hosts couldn’t recover from the opening shock. Posillipo reduced the gap to three midway through the second period (3:6). Still, the Sicilians rebuilt a 5-goal lead before the end of the quarter (8:3) and controlled the game until the end. The statistics say that the penalty shots made the difference. The visitors scored five goals from the 5m line.

Ortigia won the points it counted on. However, the Sicilians had more difficulties than expected in beating De Akker. In the 14th minute, Ortigia had a 4-giak advantage (7:3), but De Akker came back with four straight goals and leveled at 7:7 (22nd minute). Francesco Condemi converted a man-up to end Ortigia’s goalless phase that lasted for eight minutes and made it 8:7, but Boggiano leveled at 8:8. But, the hosts didn’t let De Akker surprise, they were far a better rival in the fourth quarter.

Catania and Savona were in a neck-and-neck race in the opening 10 minutes. Moreover, Catania led (1:0, 2:1, 3:2, 4:3), while the hosts were chasing the rival. Savona took control in the second period, scoring four unanswered goals in less than three minutes and went to 7:4. Patchaliev stretched the margin to four in the 17th minute (8:4) and maintained the difference in the remaining time.

European champion Pro Recco cruised to a convincing victory over Salerno.

Anzio edged out Quinto after a very exciting battle. Anzio led 6:5 at halftime. Pelicaric doubled the hosts’ advantage (7:5). But, Quinto took control earned a 9:8 advantage in the 22nd minute. The visitors couldn’t find the net in the final 10 minutes. Anzio leveled at 9:9 before the last break. In the 26th minute, Anzio’s Cuccovillo made it 10:9. It was the last goal in the game. Anzio recorded the first win in the season.
