U16 Women’s World Championships: Double victory for Italy; Japan beat the United States

August 21, 2022

Today marked the opening day of the Women’s U16 World Championships in Larissa. A few games were interesting, while the others were less compelling.

Only Italy seemed to relish playing twice today, out of the three teams that did so. The baby Setterosa had a 9-5 victory against Croatia and a 16-7 triumph over Turkiye, with Eleonora Bianco (5) and Bianca Rosta (4) both impressing in both games. Italy currently sit at the summit of Group A, just ahead of Hungary, who also defeated Turkiye in their opening fixture – with the busy Kata Hajdu netting five goals in a 19-3 victory.

The hosts Greece kicked off their tournament with a wonderful 8-5 victory over Australia. A strong second quarter was enough for the Greeks to seal an opening day win under the lights.

Meanwhile, there was perhaps an unexpected surprise in Group C as Japan defeated the United States, with Riko Bando’s goal 36 seconds from time securing the win for the Asians.

Japan’s second game of the day though resulted in a comprehensive defeat to Spain (12-6), its possible that fatigue was a factor in the nature of the defeat. Two players from CE Mediterrani’s academy, Ariadne Temprano and Carlota Penalver both secured hat-tricks in the game for the Spaniards.

In Group D, the Netherlands and Israel both defeated South Africa. Pien Gorter (3) and Nynke Willemsen (2) starred for the Oranges – who only conceded a single goal in the last period by Alexa De Villiers (Western Cape). Israel were pushed harder by the Africans, but three goals apiece for Raz Yuval and Miya Tirosh assisted their team to a victory.
