Vouliagmeni and Olympiacos celebrate victories in “European” games

The 17th round of the Greek League brought two derbies between the teams that are still on the Europen stage in the LEN competitions.

Still, neither of the encounters had a thrilling finish. The Champions League clubs were too strong for their rivals.

Vouliagmeni earned an away win (14:8) over Panionios, which will play in the LEN Euro Cup semifinals.

Olympiacos beat Apollon – 16:8. Apollon represents the nation of the Olympic silver medalists in the LEN Challenger Cup. It beat Galatasaray in the first leg of the quarterfinals, while the return match was postponed to next weekend.

Apollon managed to make the game against Olympiacos interesting in the first half. After three minutes of play, the score was 2:2. Olympiacos built a 3-goal lead by the end of the first quarter (5:2). Still, the second quarter belonged to the hosts. Apollon cut the deficit to one with two quick goals at the beginning of this period (4:5) and chased the favorite until the middle break. Olympiacos led 7:6 at halftime before scoring four goals in a row to jump to 11:6 (22nd minute). Apollon couldn’t recover from that 0:4 series. Apollon reduced the gap (8:11), but the reigning champion scored five unanswered goals (three from penalty shots) in the final period for a big 16:8 win.

Vouliagmeni didn’t leave the decision in the match against Panionios for the second half. The visitors scored nine goals already in the first 16 minutes, conceding only three. After a 9:3 first half, Vouliagmeni slowed. Each side scored five goals in the remaining time, but Panionios never came close to the visiting team.

PAOK beat Panathinaikos in Athens. The visitors from the Thessaloniki dictated the pace and built a 2-goal lead several times during the first three periods. In the fourth quarter, Panathinaikos leveled at 10:10. Still, PAOK didn’t let the hosts go further. It scored two back-to-back goals for 12:10. In the 31st minute, Panathinaikos halved the deficit (11:12), but Charalambopoulos closed the match with his fourth goal with 17 seconds to go to set the final score – 13:11.

Peristeri earned an away win, as well as Vouliagmeni and PAOK. It beat Ethnikos by five goals – 12:7. The visitors dictated the pace from the beginning. At halftime, they were 6:2 up and didn’t let Ethnikos come back.

There were a lot of changes in the standings in the relegation group.

Glyfada lost to Ydraikos (8:10) and dropped from 9th to 12th place.

Chios is atop now after a 12:9 victory over Ilysiakos. AEK demolished Chania and share 10th and 11th place with Ydraikos.

Palaio Faliro had no problems in beating Nireas Chalandriou nd came very close to 13th-placed Chania.
