The Greek water polo clubs opened the season with a traditional tournament organized by the Association of Greek water polo referees (SEDY), in cooperation with club Chios, and under the auspices of the Greek Swimming Federation. This was the 15th tournament for the members of the Greek A1 Championships. The 2022 edition was dedicated to a former Chios player Adamantios Mantis, who died three years ago, at the age of 21, after a traffic accident.

Ten teams took part. The favorite was the second-best Greek team Vouliagmeni, which won the trophy.

Many players debuted for their new clubs at the tournament that was played in several pools. Among the debutants was Vladimir Vujasinovic, the Serbian water polo legend who recently became Vouliagmeni’s head coach.

The ten teams were split into two groups of five in the first stage. Vouliagmeni was the best in Group A, while Panionios topped Group B.

After the group stage, the top two teams from each group advanced to the semifinals. Vouliagmeni convincingly beat Ethnikos (17:5) in the semis. Panionios advanced to the final after a narrow 13:12 victory over PAOK.

The medal matches were played in Vouliagmeni’s pool.

Panionios started well in the final, but Vouliagmeni was coming back step by step. Before the final quarter, Panionios led 9:8, but Vouliagmeni scored four unanswered goals in the last eight minutes for a 12:7 victory.
