USA, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Argentina reach semifinals in Lima

The women’s quarterfinals of the 18th Pan American Games in Lima showed a disparity in quality between the medal contenders and the teams which will play in the classification 5th – 8th places. Group winners (USA, Canada) and second-placed teams (Brazil and Cuba), cruised to big wins.

The male teams of the USA and Brazil also had easy tasks in the quarterfinals. Canada and Argentina, which won the 2nd places in their respective groups of the men’s tournament, had to work hard to reach the semifinals.

Quarterfinals
Women: USA – Peru 21:3, Canada – Venezuela 22:3, Cuba – Puerto Rico 14:5, Brazil – Mexico 13:3.

Men: USA – Peru 24:2, Brazil – Puerto Rico 15:4, Argentina – Cuba 9:7, Canada – Mexico 13:11.

Men, Quarterfinals

Canada – Mexico 13:11 (4:4, 3:4, 3:2, 3:1)

Canada: Constantin-Bicari 4, D’Souza 4, Patterson 2, Halajian 2, Cote 1.
Mexico: Alvarez 5, Juarez 1, Velazquez 1, Paniagua 1, Gibert 1, Grubnik 1, Gonzalez 1.

Canada was a favorite, but the Canadians didn’t secure a win before the last quarter. They opened the match with a 3:2 lead. Mexico went in front (4:3) in the 7th minute and then started a long tit-for-tat phase. Mexico was keeping the minimal advantage, but Canada equalized on each occasion. Early in the third period, Mexico earned a 2-goal lead (9:7). Canada leveled the score twice by the end of the quarter (9:9 and 10:10). The Canadians finally secured a win with a 3:0 series in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. They jumped to a 13:10 lead and Mexico couldn’t come back.

Cuba – Argentina 7:9 (1:2, 2:3, 2:2, 2:2)

Cuba: Carales 5, Peralta 2.
Argentina: Veich 2, Martino 2, Carabantes 2, Yanez 2, Camnasio 1.

Argentina was leading after the first quarter. In the 2nd period, Cuba went ahead (3:2) for the first and the last time. Argentina scored five unanswered goals and earned a 7:3 advantage two minutes and 14 seconds from the last break. That proved vital in their win, as Cuba didn’t manage to equalize until the end.

United States – Peru 24:2 (4:0, 8:2, 6:0, 6:0)

USA: Hallock 4, Bowen 4, Cupido 3, Daube 3, Hooper 3, Vavic 3, Irving 2, Obert 1. Ramirez 1.
Peru: Villar 1, Alzamora 1.

The USA Team, led by Ben Hallock and Alex Bowen (4 goals each), trashed host Peru to earn the biggest victory of the day.

Puerto Rico – Brazil 4:15 (1:5, 1:4, 1:4, 1:2)

Puerto Rico: Andino 2, Zayas 1, Loubriel 1.
Brazil: Guimaraes 4, Cotuinho 3, Freitas 2, Franco 2, R. Real 1, P. Real 1, Canra; 1, Silva 1.

Puerto Rico was controlled by Brazil. After the third quarter, the Brazilians had a big 10-goal lead (13:3) and slowed down in the last eight minutes.

Women, Quarterfinals

United States – Peru 21:3 (5:1, 6:1, 6:0, 4:1)

United States: Haralabidis 3, Steffens 3, Wiliams 3, Musselman 2, Seidemann 2, J. Neushul 2, A. Fischer 2, M. Fischer 1, Fattal 1, K. Neushul 1, Johnson 1.
Peru: A. Lopez 3.

The USA Team demolished Peru – 21:3. All 11 American players managed to score. Just like in the match against Venezuela on Wednesday, goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson was given a chance to play in the field in the second half. She was replaced by defender Makenzie Fisher (3rd quarter) and center Aria Fischer (4th period). The three collected 14 saves (Johnson 7, M. Fischer 5, A. Fischer 2). Aria Fisher even saved a penalty shot. Ashleigh Johnson scored one goal by converting an extra player in the third period.

Venezuela – Canada 3:22 (0:8, 2:4, 0:6, 1:4)

Venezuela: Torres 1, Agelvis 1, Martinez 1.
Canada: Alogbo 5, Wright 3, Bekhazi 3, Fournier 3, Christmas 2, Crevier 2, Eggens 1, McKee 1, McKelvey 1, Paul 1.

Canada rushed to an 11:0 lead before Venezuela found the net for the first time in the middle of the second period. The Canadians, led by Krystina Alogbo (5 goals) didn’t slow down in the second half and achieved the biggest win in the women’s quarterfinals 22:3.

Brazil – Mexico 13:3 (2:1, 2:1, 4:1, 5:1)

Brazil: Bahia 4, Abla 3, Ferreira 2, Belorio 2, G. Dias 1, Duarte 1.
Mexico:Murrieta 1, Sanchez 1, Ramos 1.

Mexico kept up with the Brazilians for a while. After Brazil’s opening 2:0 lead, Mexico equalized (2:2) early in the second period. Brazil responded with eight straight goals to jump to a 10:2 lead with five and a half minutes remaining on the clock.

Puerto Rico – Cuba 5:14 (1:4, 1:2, 1:4, 2:4)

Puerto Rico: Medina 1, Quinones 1, Am. Ortiz 1, Garcia 1, Guzman 1.
Cuba: Bernal 4, Grau 3, Chavez 2, Carrasco 2, Ramirez 2, A. Gonzalez 1.

Puerto Rico gained an early 1:0 advantage in the Caribbean derby. Cuba got on the scoreboard quickly after Puerto Rico’s goal and dominated until the end.
